Public Service Announcement: Don't reply to Private Message Notification emails

Thread Starter
Hi everyone

This is a reminder that the email notifications many of you opt to receive when a new private message comes to your account cannot actually be used to reply to private messages. They are a "dumb" notification, and nothing more.

Several times a day we receive emails into the site's inbox from people who have inadvertently replied to the email, rather than logging into the site and replying to the member that sent them a message. This is a problem for a few reasons:
  • Most email clients include a quote of previous messages in replies. This means that some of our staff can see your PM conversations if you reply to the notification emails.
  • Replying to notification emails does absolutely nothing to get a reply to the member who sent you a message. You must still log into the website and reply to the private message itself, rather than the notification email. We often see these email replies come in for Marketplace discussions, and would hate for a deal to go south because of missed info.
  • The (growing) flood of replies to private message notifications creates extra workload on us, as we've got a greatly expanded number of tickets to close out before we can get to the real issues that came in via email.

So please, when you see an email with the text "DO NOT REPLY TO THIS EMAIL!" at the very top, heed the warning.
