BOINCers Gone Bonkers 10 - September 6th-8th, 2011 *OVER* - Page 10

I just had a weird heat wave over here which made me trip overtemp shutdowns even on my stock PC's (and without using stock cooler to boot). Lappy almost survived (saw a 95c top mark on RealTemp before it got down). Couldn't do a thing as i was using remote desktop at work, so i kinda lost 2 hours of crunching. And it's friggin raining at the moment.

Only in the tropic, ladies and gentleman.

True that
I hope to get at least 3m total points after BGB. Yesterday got 448k, and before BGB i racked 105k. I also plan to stop tomorrow night to give me a bit more headroom and start folding again.

Just found out that with PrimeGrid i cannot watch any video or play even the oldest games (even Ultimate DOOM gets laggy ), but i can with Collatz (which i won't touch anymore as i reach my 1m point goal ), SETI and F@H. So it'll be a BGB-only project

But i was amazed to get overtemp shutdown on a E6400 at friggin stock speeds with a Thermalright Ultima 90 in push/pull and MX-2 applied. Also my HTPC got turned off (lapped E4500 stock at the moment, with lapped H50 push/pull as i changed RAM and OC got stable, and no time to get it back into shape). And both are clean, as i cleaned everything before BGB.

Yes, outside heat is a pain... poor A/C here is also an expensive pain...

PrimeGrid manages to get most of it's code loaded in the GPU ram and runs it full speed on all the COREs and takes over the board. That was originally one of my major concerns and it has never changed. There is a large thread I started about in PG message boards.

So, for the hoggin of GPU's and the overpointing ways, I hated to run it... but to make points fast on a CUDA card, it's the best game in town. Dnetc/Moo Wrapper are the best games in town for the ATI cards I think.

All PG has to do is modify their code to limit the number of cores it uses and they refuse. So, hell with them! LOL!

I run it for the sole purpose of providing the team with extra points on the 955 system.. other than that, I find my best liked GPU project is Einstein with Milkyway and Seti both very close behind.

Try BOINCing without AC like a real man

What i did for PG is assign the lowest CPU usage to it. I can still run 4 projects on CPU without any penalty like higher runtime or sacrificing a whole core (like with SETI, which hog 0.53 CPU each task, taking a whole thread of my i3). PG projects use 0.11 CPU, so i can run 6 tasks on my sig rig and 3 on my HTPC. Plus, my 450's get rid of them in ~35 min each, so it's still a good source of points.

CPU tasks are the least point producers anyways, even tho NFS seems to be hella good. But even with my i3 with "weak cores" and your x4 (both clocked around the same speed) running PG on 2 nvidia cards, my i3 only takes 16 minutes longer per task (50 min of the x4 vs 76 min of my i3). Wonder if it's the architecture...

For GPU, other than SETI (and F@H, but that's not a BOINC project), nothing has called my attention. Rosetta has no GPU tasks (i'd treat it like F@H otherwise), and the best rewarding projects involve math, which i do no like much doing really, other than for points.

Amazingly enough. I have my window open and it is 61F here right now. I am loving it. So tired of the heat.

I keep walking into my room and getting worried. Thinking my rig is idling or had BSOD, because it is running so quite now. Viper fans running at 800-1100RPM vs the normal 1900RPM at 92-95% load, PWM FTW. I wish it could be like this all year long...

EDIT: Trying to recruit a new BOINC teammate. Hopefully they dont start throwing rocks.
