Powered active displayport can support up to 2560x1600 without any problems. Non powered can only support around 1280x720 without glitches or problems. Anything above that resolution and you may experience problems.

Not true. I bought a $30 non-powered adapter and am running a third display at 1080p with no problems whatsoever.

The difference IIRC is that powered adapters are dual-link DVI and non-powered are single link DVI, so the difference boils down to that.

Yup.

I'm running my third panel on a DP->VGA adapter that cost $20USD.
