Headphones vs 2.1 Speakers

I'm wondering, which would benefit more from an Amp, some AKG701's or a set of 2.1 speakers valued at about the same($250)?

Which are the best 2.1 speakers for around 250?

Headphones would benefit more from a headphone amplifier.. speakers either don't require one (active) or need amplification to run at all (passive). As for which is "better".. what do you intend on using either for? Music? Games? Movies? Private listening? For straight up fidelity, you generally get more for your money by going for headphones.. but they're completely different beasts, really. As for your last question, I wouldn't go for a "2.1 setup" at a budget that high. I'd either look for powered bookshelf monitors or else a cheap receiver+passives combo. Then add a sub later.

I like listening to music strictly on my computer, most of that is electronic/dubstep and Rap. I already have a Yamaha Amp from about 5 years ago.

the AKG K701 will not suit your music tastes at all.

How about Audio Technica M50s?

M50s should be great for electronica. They're widely renowned for their bass response.

However, if you're looking to spend around $250, why not get an Ultrasone PRO 750?
