Server OS Upgrade

Thread Starter
I currently have a server running server 2003 x64 but im looking at moving to a more media friendly OS for streaming around the house to xbox's and standalone network media players.

Spec is as follows

Intel S3000AH Mainboard
Intel E4300
8GB Registered DDR2
Dell Perc 5i 512mb With BBU On Raid 5 with Hot Spare for 2 redundant drives.
8x Samsung F3 1TB
4x Lan - Dual Lan Intel Pro 1000 Combined With the Dual Onboard Lan
700W OCZ Modular
APC 1500 UPS

At the moment i use 1Gb lan for my 100mb broadband, 2x for a bonded lan connection to managed netgear switch and 1 lan for connection to freenas box i use on iscsi for dedicated backup server via Symantec Backup Exec.

I want to stay with an active directory as i use a domain at home to control folder permissions and logon scripts etc.

Ive thought about going upto either WHS2011 or SBS2011 Essentials.

My main concern with WHS2011 is installing AD as you could with old WHS or having to totally wipe my drives so WHS can format them.

Just wanted to know if anyone had a similar build and has played with different os's??

As far as I know you can't use AD with WHS. Based on your specs I would upgrade to server 2008r2, while it may be a little more messy setting p for media streaming it is still the best choice.

I would suggest going for Windows Server 2008 R2. Are you a student? If so, you can have it for free: DreamSpark
