The power supply from the wall is fine. You only have to multiply the reading by the efficiency of the PSU. So if you have a PSU that is 85% efficient you are using 595w.

Also, under the most extreme circumstances the power draw can be much higher than 250w. This, for example, is consumption measures from the cards themselves:

On the 580 tri SLi side, notice the power consumption is about 1000W for the whole system. You're gonna overclock them, so I'd say a 1200W unit, something like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817171055

They're rated for how much power they can deliver to the system. So that's why I said that 700W at the wall means the system pulls approximately 595W from the PSU (that is, at 85% efficiency).

That would also mean running a 850w psu at 100%...

The AX850 is designed to continuously deliver 850W to a system.

So that means that it would likely be at approximately 100% while the entire system is under full load.

Fair enough. Now "assume" that your capacitors are not going to age at all. I've yet to find a psu that didn't have aging capacitors.

I can throw some more objections to running at 100%, but that one alone should suffice.

Run your psu wherever you want. I've stuck to the sweet spot for over a decade and haven't had a single psu crap out on me.
