Failing Hard Drive? Or am I just stupid.

Thread Starter
I have a notebook hard drive which is giving me terrible performance, I mean /* Terrible */ !

So I run the HD Tune Pro Trial and I see that my performance is all freaking over the place...

Example:

And ontop of terrible preformance, SMART noted 6 "Ultra DMA CRC Errors". It's a Hitachi drive with almost 700 power cycles.

Do I bit the bullet and buy another hard drive? Or am I missing something?

All Help is appreciated, Thanks in Advance.

Is it slow in use, is it Clicking?

Laptop HHD will have a shorter life as they dont get cooled.

Hi,

Your maximum seems allright if its a 5400rpm drive.
Your average is not how it should be though and also the acces time is to high.
Have you tryed to defragged it yet ?

Sorry, i have no idea what the errors in SMART mean, tryed to google it yet ?

Its definitely slow enough to feel lag in just using the computers basic functions. (ie. opening folders/menus)

Edit: The error stand for data going bad between the hard drive controller and the motherboard. But I know that Hitachis Controllers are not trust worthy

Edit 2: Defragmenting is ridiculously slow. Unless I leave it there for a few days, then nothing will get accomplished. Its pretty empty so I don't see why its taking so long

I definitely hear some high pitches noises sometimes when the heal moves suddenly. I don't hear constant clicking like an outright HDD fail. I guess my question is this; Do i buy a new hard drive from newegg?
New drives are so cheap that it may just be worth it to get one so you don't have to take the time to troubleshoot such a slow drive. You can always hook it up as an external drive later and format/ defrag it and see if you can get it working as just extra storage.

That WD is nice, I just saw yours was 650GB so I figured you'd want that or more.
