What should I do with my two 460's?

post #1 of 69

Hello everyone! This is my first post, so please bare with me. My previous forum family died so I had to find a new one - anyway, moving on!

I'm in the mood for some upgrading from my two EVGA 460 1GB's. I just haven't been pleased with the performance I've been getting with them and I feel that a single-card solution is the right way to go. I've kind of been looking at the 6950's or a 570, as money doesn't grow on trees for me (sucks to be 17). Basically, I'm looking for the best of the best for under.... $300? Nothing too high, I'm wanting to upgrade other parts of my pc (but I already have all that figured out).

[Long, elaborate plan] I'm thinking my cards will at least sell for $100 used on Ebay, maybe $125 if I'm lucky (I've been pretty lucky in the past so who knows). That leaves me at least $200 for my cards. To put it short, I'm upgrading my PC worth $362, and have estimated that I can sell my used parts for at least $230 - leaving me the difference of $132 out of my total $350. After which, I'll have $218 to spend, but giving the $200 from my video cards, that would be $418 - but obviously I don't want to spend all my money as I need to save up a bit. Anything under $300 would leave me at least $118 left, so that sounds good.

So, what should I get for under $300 in the terms of a single-card solution? It can be AMD or Nvidia, that doesn't matter to me (Intel can run both Crossfire and SLI ;D)

Thanks a lot guys!

You're not pleased with the performance of SLI GTX 460? I can max out Crysis, Crysis 2, and even Metro 2033 with decent fps. Do you rather spending a lot of money to get >100fps on any games? 570 and 6950 are no better than SLI 460.

if you have 1080p monitor, wait for new gen, unless you're spoiled and want to splurge on a couple of 580's.

and you're saying you're not pleased with the 460's performance. That's impossible because they even compete/best even a 580. Might be bad drivers or something wrong in your hardware.

As I said, I'm not pleased with the performance I'm getting. I can't max out Cryris 1 or 2 and get above 40 fps the entire time. Metro 2033 has to be played on High settings without AA. Maybe it's my motherboard or something else on my system, I'm not sure. Perhaps SLI isn't working for some odd reason. After upgrading my mobo, memory, and cpu cooler (to fit the new memory), I'll see how things are.

Also, thanks for the replies.

@Horsemama1956
I haven't been keeping up on what new cards are coming out. Should I wait a week or two for something to bring down prices?

Yes.

Wait for the 28nm cards to come out.

It will be sometime this year, but we don't know when. I'd say late october at the earliest.

I haven't had experience with the EVGA B-stock but these deals look good. All I know is that the items have a 90-day warranty and that they don't come with accessories. Is there anything else? Are they refurbished items? Thanks again!
