New Build Help

Thread Starter
I'm not sure if this is the perfect thread for this. But feel free to route to me to the correct one if not. Getting ready to attempt my first custom build. I've been doing a lot of research so my understanding is growing but it would be great to get some opinions an suggestions.

A. There is no budget really. Under 3k

B. I want it to last 3-4 years + If i have to spend an extra $150 to go over the top now id rather do that then spend $400 down the road.

C. I want it to have some flash. So overkill is a must to some extent.

D. All of this will be going in a custom desk (built into it. No case) I'm trying to build which will be visible so everything needs to match an look nice.

E. I wanna have a pretty trick water cooled system. Which will also be routed to an xbox. An possible used to cool the rest of the AV cabinet inside of the desk as well.

Heres what i've picked out so far. None of this is for sure. Just what i felt like is the best option for my money.

Motherboard: ASUS MAXIMUS IV EXTREME LGA 1155 Rebublic of Gamers Intel Z68 DDR3 2400 ATX Motherboard

or

ASUS P8Z68 Pro ( Intel Z68 ATX )

CPU: Intel Core i7-2600K Processor 3.4GHz 8 MB Cache Socket LGA1155

Video Card: 2x Radeon HD 6950

Sound Card: Creative Labs SB X-FI Titanium Fatal1ty Champ PCIe Sound Card

RAM: G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 16GB (4 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600

or maybe just 8GB

The rest of it i plan to worry about after i get this stuff handled. Porbly a small SSD for the OS and a 1 TB HD

Haven't even looked into what water cooling system an i believe I'm gonna need at least 1000W power supply.

Thanks for the suggestions and advice.

a 850watt PSU is more then enough for a 2600k and 2 580s so you dont really need 1000w.

If your budget is 3k you could probably get a few more items to "future-proof" it.

Here's what I would get:

CPU: 2600k (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115070)
MoBo: Maximus IV Extreme Z68 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131760)
RAM: G. Skill Ripjaw X DDR3 1600 (8GB or 16GB, up to you) (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231428)
HDD: 2x 120-160GB SSD - SSD's are beastly and your budget has plenty of room to incorporate them. Getting two ensures you have enough storage for your OS, program files, and games for the years to come. For the rest of your storage, pick up 2x1TB Spinpoint F3 drives or just a single 2TB. (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820148348 and http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822152185)
GPU: If you REALLY want to push your budget, you could SLI two 590's...but at this point I would recommend SLI 580's (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130590)
PSU: Like above poster mentioned, you'd be fine with an 850W but there's no harm in jumping up to 1000W (Corsair and Antec are good PSU brands - definitely go modular). (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817139007)
Sound Card: Any of the Creative XiFi Titanium cards are fine. I use the Titanium Fatal1ty Professional, but if you want the front control plate go with the Champion (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16829102021)

I'm not familiar with water cooling but the H50 and H70 are popular CPU coolers on OCN. If you search "water cooling P67" or "water cooling sandy bridge" you should be able to find a lot of useful information.

^^there is harm in taking overkill psu's.....they would not work in there optimum efficiency zone then...

and end result much higher electricity bills....

and for the budget the above posted rig is nice except a few modifications..

1) take hx850 and not any 1000watt psu for 2 gtx 580's or get hx1000 watt for gtx 590 sli.
2) get a good case like the nzxt phantom
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...hantom&x=0&y=0

3) why do u want water cooling any specific reasons.....???

Good call on the PSU. However, he mentioned he doesn't need a case as he's building it into a custom made desk :O

Was talking with some people in the ATI section about possibly doing 3 x 6950's cause i want to possibly run up to 3 32" screens.

I wanna do the water cooling just because it looks cool an i want a show off piece. Plus with it being built in the desk i don't want to have to have openings for several fans.

even for 3 monitors 2 gtx 580 r enough...
and better yet get 2 gtx 590...

and for the ati side u could get either 2 hd6990's or tri fire with 1 hd6870 and 1 hd6990.
Yeah, 2x GTX580 is enough for three monitors. I prefer Nvidia, so that's what I would buy. In the end it's up to your preferences.
