So it sounds like your saying that the SLI is more than enough for what I'm looking at doing. But the 6990 would probably make me more future proof? An since you can combine them maybe down the road I would be able to upgrade an have the 6990 be the secondary card?

That is a solid plan. The 6990 water-cooled will provide plenty of GPU power on it's own, then you could upgrade to dual 6990's if needed in the future.
Have you considered a color-scheme?That will help deciding particular hardware choices. I gather that's very important for this project?

in that case...its all about choices...u can take either gtx 590 or hd6990 and add another down the road..

gtx 590 is the better option here as its 5-10% faster in many scenarios when compared to hd6990...
but same can be said about hd6990 its about 5% faster in some games....but overall gtx 590 is a little better due to better drivers.....
so imo get whichever is considerably cheaper then add another down the road...

I think what I'm getting t is with the SLI i can only attach another 580 or 590.

Will the 6990 be the last thing compatible with 6990/6970/6950 or will there be improvements in the future beyond a 6990 that will be compatible with those?

Future proofing is high on the list.

Redwoodz: i think i wanna go with black an blue. I still have no idea how I'm gonna staln or side or anything the desk. Lots of decisions to make

wrong in nvidia u can only combine gtx 590 with gtx 590 and nothing else...

and in amd u can add hd6950/70 or hd6990 to hd6990 but u wont be able to combine newer series card with hd6990....

I understand you can't combine NVidia's. But i think what your saying is yes you can combine a 6990 with a 6970 or 6950 or combine all 3 but there won't be any others coming out that you can combine with these?

So in the grand scheme of future proofing neither has much to gain other than going for the more powerful an cost effective now

yup u nailed it....
if u got $$$ by all means get the gtx 590 and put a waterblock on it and oc like hell(although i must warn u the dual gpu cards r kinda fragile they can't take much overclocking) but i don't think it will matter to u even at stock this card will do more than enough to satisfy u in every aspect of graphical computing...

So just a single GTX 590 will do 3 monitors at full specs? An then down the road rather than upgrade to the newer stuff i could simply just add another 590? Also i need 3 outputs on whatever i do. I want to run HDMI with everything. Is there any loss in having to run a DVI to HDMI adapter?

Doing a little quick research it seems 580's in sli out perform 1 590. So i guess the last question is what's the better option down the road. Sli 580's now an go to a 3rd later or 1 590 now an go to a 2nd in the future?
