Gaming/Rendering Build Check Before Purchase

Hey Everyone,

Just waiting for some grant money to come in to build my 1st computer. Was going to go for Nvidia 2D surround at first but due to some car troubles, going to just go for 2 monitors and 1 video card now. Please let me know what you think. Constructive criticicsm more than welcome! Also could someone recommend a speaker system ~$100, going to get the Ultrasone Pro 550's but also want a speaker system. Thanks.

The build looks good but I'm not sure that the P8Z68 Deluxe mobo is required for a build like that. You could get away with a slightly lower spec'd board that will save you about $50. I also would suggest an OCZ Vertex 3 ssd in place of the Intel 510 you have listed. The Vertex is much cheaper and just as quick or even quicker in tests/benchmarks. That will save you another $60 Good luck and have fun with that sweet rig!

Thanks for the quick reply Farmer Boe! Good suggestions! The money, as long as it doesn't go over 3k is really not a big deal since it's in some ways "free money". If I don't spend it than it is going to waste. If saving the 100 dollars you talked about wasn't necessary, would it still be alright to keep the 2 components how they are? (ssd/mobo) The other 300 dollars I plan on spending of the grant is going for a nice pair of cans and a speaker system.

It looks like a great list to me...

There are only a couple of suggestions I'd make, and only since you said the money is "use it or lose it".

For $15 more you can step up to a Gold certified PSU:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817139015

I personally like the WD Caviar Black 64MB cache for $89:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136533

I just like WD drives...haven't had one fail me yet...<knocks on wood> From all I've heard, the F3's are supposed to be great drives too.
Either way, I would pick up a couple more. Can never have too much storage. Or you could RAID them if you like.

As far as speakers, I am not an audiophile by any stretch of the imagination, but I do have these, and I think they sound great:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16836166006

I wanted something that wasn't too big on my desk, but sounded good. I don't really crank them up unless I'm the only one in the office though.

That would put you right up under $3K.

As far as your SSD, I like your choice. There are faster ones out there, but I think the 510 series are among the most reliable. I have a 320 series, and it's way faster than anything I had before.

Make sure to post some pics when you build this beast.

Just my 2c worth...hope it helps,

Rich

Thanks for the input, definitely going to upgrade the CPU. I think I'm going to stick with the spinpoint hdd's because my friend has about 10 of them and praises them, so I'll go with them. I like the speaker choice, but I have been looking at the Swan M10's, anyone have an opinion on those, as far as it being good for my setup?

Whole build looks good, except you could have saved $50 going with a mainstream mobo but all is well.

By the way the best sub $150 all in one sound setup is

. I know it's slightly over budget but for what you get its a highly recommended deal.

Cool, I think I'm going to go with that speaker system. I have another question, will the Z68 future proof my build more than the p67? Is it worth the extra money if I can afford it? I know there is no such thing as "future proof" but you know what I mean. Thanks for all the input, just waiting for my check to get here, hopefully Monday I can finally hit that checkout button!

I guess you could say it will. I mean, since it does have extra features, it certainly won't go obsolete before the P67. Since you're getting a sound card, it really depends on whether you want to use any of the other features...maybe SSD caching at some point?
