Overclocking & Choosing RAM for Socket 1155 - Page 45

hello all,

I just picked up an asrock z77 1155 mobo and I'm going to stick either a 2500k or a 3570k into it. my question is will be hyperX 1.65v ram cause problems?

Someone told me (on this forum) that it might, and I just wanted some more opinions, maybe someone who has pared them.

I want to get the thing clocked up around 4.5+ if possible and I will grab some different ram if I have to when my next paycheck rolls around but I would rather stick with the hyperX if possible.

thanks in advance thumb.gif

I don't see why it would be a problem unless the RAM is just not compatible with the board.

Hello..just wondering if anyone could help me with my current RAM kit ( http://www.thinkcomputers.org/patriot-viper-xtreme-division-2-ddr3-1866-8gb-dual-channel-memory-kit-review/ ). It is a 1866 1.65v kit. I am currently using a Z77 Sabertooth wiht a 3570k CPU. I have used the auto OC feature in the bios and I've been able to OC my RAM to 1921mhz with a BCLK of 103..what I would like to do is "tighten" the timings. I am a complete noob so even after reading what each timing does I still am a bit confused as how to tie them all together to maintain stability.

from my understanding 1.65 is the maximum voltage Sandy/Ivy Bridge is able to use. According to the package I am supposed to be able to OC this RAM to 2000mhz and still maintain the 1.65v. unfortunatlly my rig will not boot up at that setting. I actually have to purge all power from my motherboard, then restart the computer. Does this have to do with changing the timings or have I reached a limitation to the memory controller of my CPU?

Any advice or dropping some knowledge on me would greatly be appreciated.

Man, where to start. Well, There really is no voltage for RAM or CPU that is set in stone, there is only guildlines or rule of thumbs. I run my RAM at 1.77 with Ivy all the time.

For setting timings, find a program you like that will change them in the OS. Then start on the first timings and tighin it by 1 and test using a benchmarking program such as SuperPI or MaxMem.
If it passes, tighin it again untill it won't pass or you blue sreen or freeze. Go back one or two timings and leave it. Now more on to the next timing and repeat. It can take a while but the more timings and sub timings you do the more yoiu will notice it on the system. thumb.gif

Picked up the same board, a pro4 and will use it with a I5 2500k. I am still in a quandry about what ram to buy. I want 16gb at the very least, will be running some virtualization so the extra memory helps there. Any luck with your Kingstons? Do they OC pretty well on that board? I was thiking about going for Sammy's but they only come in 2x4 and I don't want to use up all four slots for 16gb.

yes sir they do just fine, never had any problems. but remember technically you are overvolting them in the motherboard - according to Intel. it never gave me any problems and overclocking was fine. I've never seen it give any other ocners problems either.

the kingstons actually went into my wifes rig and I picked up some samsung low voltage to experiment with overclocking. thumb.gif

not a whole lot of information on 8gb dimms.
I will read through this, in the meantime could someone have a look at my issue?
this seems to be just the place to find the help i need.

Hi, is it good to overclock Kingston Valuerams? I've 2 x 4 GB 1333 MHz with C9 timings. Can I overclock them to 1600 MHz? I'm afraid it's not a great idea because they don't have heatsink or any heatspreader. Low profile with 1.5 voltages. Thanks.
