TF2 - Low fps on good comp.

Hello all. Long time lurker, first time poster. The sheer randomness of this problem forced me out of the woodworks.

Starting yesterday I've been getting the standard low fps in high activity areas of maps. Until yesterday it ran I would say 90 - 200 fps. Currently in a 24 man server in an area with a lot happening I get 40 - 60 fps. So I serve you with this conundrum. It's gonna be a long post, so don't just skip through it and tell me to defrag!!

My specs:
Intel i7 920 2.66 Ghz
XFX Non-Reference HD 5870 running stock
3Gb 1600 Hz G.Skill gaming ram running at 1066 Hz cuz I'm a weenie :3
750 W Corsair PSU

I've had this build for a year running TF2 at those fps, and before that around 100 fps on an HD 4670.

These are my current launch options:
-novid -noforcemaccel -noforcemparms -high -noborder -h 1080 -w 1920 -nocrashdialog
In order, skip start video, kill mouse acceleration, kill mouse acceleration, set high cpu priority, launch windowed at full screen resolution, and suppress the crash dialogue (which I added yesterday in an attempt to fix my constant crashing issue)

Things I have done to date:
Verify game cache (like every hour)
Defrag game files (like every hour)
Delete clientregistry.blob
Add 'steam/appcache/stats' to exclude list on AV
Completely reinstall drivers. (I hand delete leftovers because I don't trust driversweeper)
Re-downloaded and re-installed TF2

I run the same fps that I used to in other games as far as I can tell. I use vsync for most so idk if they dropped any, but I don't go under 60 fps in Just Cause 2. I went into L4D2, set off a car alarm, and spun in circles and didn't go below 85 fps (averaged over 100).

The card is running 3d clock speeds, putting it at around 70% load average, 87% max.
I'm spitballing here on the CPU load but in resource monitor it looks like I got one of my cores up to 75% load, and the rest stayed below 40%. Max temp of hottest core 58C.
Due to all of the things I'm currently running to make this post I'm using 89% of my 3 gigs of ram, normally its anywhere from 66% - 75%. Yesterday when I was first poking around at the problem I was only using 70%.

The thing that gets me is that it's only this game, completely out of no where. The last update was a change in the localization files and the addition of some promo items. I have bad memory but I'm pretty positive I didn't change anything on my end that could cause this.

Make sure multicore rendering is enabled in the advanced video settings. Also I'm not sure how well the Source engine scales with 8 virtual threads, I would imagine not too well. Larger servers (24 - 32 man) are more CPU intensive so at stock 2.66ghz, your 920 is holding you back a good bit. An overclock of around 3ghz - 3.6ghz should help alleviate some of the FPS drops definitely, because a 5870 is a pretty powerful card for Source games. Lastly make sure you're running your memory at the right settings, unless it actually is 1066mhz memory.

Thanks for replying, I know this was about as specific of a post as there could be.

I've been procrastinating turning off hyperthreading for a long time just because I'm lazy. Thanks for giving me a legitamate reason to, lol. Also, I had turned multi-core rendering off because it made the game really unstable, but I'll take unstable over 30 fps. As for the ram, the default ram clock speed for the 920 is 1066 Hz. Its stock speed is 1600 Hz and when I bought it I had intended to run it at that, but I'm not exactly sure the connection between ram clock speed and my cpu (more specifically why my cpu even has a default ram speed) so I played it safe. It clocked itself to that speed by default if it makes a difference. I'm ready to feel like a tard if it doesn't matter though, so fire away. tongue.gif

I'm really hoping valve just released a crappy update. I need to edit my first post, but I found a more detailed update on a wiki that said they also updated the localization files in addition to adding all those promos. If it turns out to be another stupid valve update I'll leave the post for the most part intact to save people the trouble of all the crap I've done. I'll update after I try out your suggestions.

Update: Multi-core rendering got me above 60 fps for the most part, but the crashes are pretty bad. I can make it through about one round. I might have lied when I said I preferred the crashes.

Welcome to TF2. This is NORMAL.

Most of the limitations in FPS come from the amount of action going on at once - even with a 2500K it will struggle now and again. In addition, you have a huge amount of network activity going on as well.

Everything is working fine. Mine drops to 20FPS sometimes but I can usually get over 100FPS in low action areas.
