Phenom 9550 Overclocking

Thread Starter
Hi, i tried to overclock my 9550 (it took me a long time) without results.

So i need your help. I Have GIGABYTE GA-M52L-S3 motherboard with newest BIOS (F9a); 4GB (2x2GB) Kingston DRR2 800 RAM; Enermax Infinity 650W Power supply and SilentiumPC Fortis HE1225 Cooler (nice temp! 20C !!!; stress= 24C!!!)

So in bios i have these options:

CPU Freq. (Default = 200)
PCIE Clock (Def 100)
CPU Clock (Auto=11x)
CPU NorthBridge Freq (Auto)
Set Memory Clock (Auto)
DRAM Config [Press Enter ]
CPU HT Link V*
Chipset V
DDR2 V
CPU V

*V- voltage

I seen on this forum people overclocked this CPU to 3.0GHz!

How to do that?

Sorry for my english i am from poland...

I do not think you will want to overclock very far. The board is not rated to handle high TDP processors, and when you overclock you're going to raise the TDP of the 9550 significantly. I think at most 2.5 GHz is about as far as you can go before the safety of your motherboard starts to get in question.

Now to answer your question, you overclock by increasing the CPU Frequency in the BIOS. The default is 200. This number is multiplied by the CPU clock to give you the final speed. So 200 times 11 equals 2200, the frequency of a stock 9550. You can't increase the CPU clock on that processor so you can only increase the CPU Frequency. Increase it by 10 Mhz increments and test for stability. So you'll go from 200 to 210 to 220 to 230. So for your first increment, you'll increase the CPU frequency to 210, which will put you core speed as reported by CPU-z at 2310 MHz (210 x 11). When you find your processor isn't stable and you've increased the voltage as far as you're willing to go (see below), then drop the CPU Frequency until it's stable. So if you get to 230 and it's not stable then drop to 225-227 and just keep testing.

Now you're not done yet. When you increase the CPU Frequency in the BIOS you're also increasing the NorthBridge and RAM as well. Right now you have them at Auto. You'll want to drop them down a notch so that they stay the same speed they currently are. So your HT Link (Northbridge) should stay at or under 1000 Mhz and your RAM needs to stay at or under 800 MHz.

Finally, if you run into instability then you need to increase the CPU voltage. Do this one increment at a time. I wouldn't suggest increasing it very much because your motherboard probably can't handle it.

Now if you have the cash, and if you have revision 2.0 of this board, you're better off upgrading to a Phenom II X4. You'll get much better performance than you can out of an overclocked 9550. If you have revision 1.0 then you don't have an upgrade you can do. edit: Ah, I see you have BIOS F9A so you can upgrade to a Phenom II if you want. http://www.gigabyte.com/support-down....aspx?pid=2818

The board has a very, very minimal 3 phase power with no split phase, using older lower quality design.
I wouldn't take that processor very far with OC, there's a risk associated with improper power delivery. If I'm not mistaken 95W is the max TDP rating and for Phenom x4s too.

The Phenom II x4 or Athlon II x4 makes for a nice upgrade if you have cash.

Phenom processors do not overclock very far at all, You are better off buying a faster processor and better mobo if you want better gaming results.

I got my mates Phenom X3 8450 from 2.1 to 2.418 with 1.3v. They clock horribly but you can still get a few hundred mhz out of them.
