Connecting both analog and digital signals to Samsung PX2370

I never claim to be a video buff, so my apologies if this is a ridiculous question. The Samsung PX2370 has both analog and digital channels, both of which connect through a single DVI port. What I'm trying to do is connect both signals at the same time through the single DVI port and then switch between the two simply by changing the source channel on the monitor.

This is apparently unheard of, at least in the way I'm looking to do it. I realize I could likely use a KVM switch, but I was hoping to avoid that just to save a bit of space on my desk and hopefully cables length as well. In addition, I don't need to share the keyboard and mouse.

Anyway, what I found is a cable that is designed to connect to a single DVI port on a video card and then output to two monitors, one DVI and one VGA. Is it possible to just reverse the connection and connect the 'main' DVI connector to the monitor and then have the VGA cable to the analog source (laptop) and the DVI connector to the digital source (desktop's second video output)?

If that won't work, does anyone have any recommendations for a decent switch that will work for this setup around the same cost as the cable I linked above (less than $30, preferably)? As a note, I have already tried using the HDMI channel coming from y desktop's video card, but it looks terrible compared to DVI for some reason.

Thanks for any insight. The cable is a bit on the expensive side to just order and see if it works or not (the cheapest I've found from a reputable dealer is about $20).

So far so good. Looks like it was money well spent for my situation
