Go By CPU Temp, or Core Temp

Thread Starter
Hi everyone, and I am here because my processor is confusing me.

I am using an H50 water cooling loop, on a Deneb 965 BE, with a bunch of fans (HafX). Basically on average, Gigabyte's Easy Tune 6 reads CPU temp at 32-41 degrees celcius, but on the other hand, HWMonitor and AMD Overdrive only display the core temps, and they are reaching temps of 56-59 degrees.

This troubles me. The max you should take an AMD processor is 65 degrees, so this is really pushing it. Any ideas people? What do I go by? Is my cooler simply insufficient? I mean its idling at 500-900 RPM with a max of 2000 RPM, so I don't think its that....

Go by the overall CPU temp, or Core Temp?

Actually I think 62c is max. And I use core temp, but mine is usually the opposite of yours. I usually read higher on CPU temp, rather than core temp. I never go above 49c core temp. Whereas my "CPU" temp will hit 64 occasionally during Intel Burn or such.

The CPU temp, is by a sensor on the motherboard at the socket. The cpu core temp is calculated by the core. I look at it like a cars engine. The outside will be hot, but as long as the coolant inside is in spec. then you are good to go. So I always look at core temp, but I do keep an eye on CPU temp just to make sure that it doesn't hit some ridiculous high temp.

As far as temps, are you overclocking? If so what speed and what voltage. Maybe you need to reapply the thermal paste?

Also go to your USER CP at the top of the screen and go to the left side and fill out your system info. It will prevent people having to ask you about your system info.

I will do that, and I wanna overclock, but these temps are insane. Its a brand new AM3+ mobo, and the fans I have on are outrageous, I don't get why I am idling at 56 C

Note: Actually, while checking HWMonitor after idling a while, I am at 46 Core, and and 44 CPU. I don't see why it seems to be so unstable, should I give the thermal paste a few days to prime before i make assumptions?

Ok, so those temps are at stock speeds. Hmm.. sounds like maybe you didn't get a good application of thermal paste. Maybe too much or too little?

Did you use the thermal paste that came with the h50 or did you use something different. When I put on my Kuhler 920, I used Artic Silver, not the stuff they supplied. Like I said, my CPU is almost always reads higher than my core temps.

My pc idles/browses internet etc at like 33c. My temp when playing Battlefield Bad Company 2 for hours tops out at 43c....

Yeah, I used stock paste, its not all that bad I hear. Oh well, the build has only been active about 16 hours at this point, I will let it prime and see if I can get those temps lower, maybe you are right and I need new thermal paste.

Yea, I got these temps straight out of the box, and this was my first time ever installing a heatsink. I would imagine you don't have a good seat. I would buy some AS and replace that stuff and see what happens.

Just an update, its gotten significantly better since when I posted this, but that Antec looks pretty badass, I should consider buying it. There are also other things to consider, but vapor coolers are kinda meh compared to these closed water loops.

Here is my build:

Uh oh, encountered an issue. HWMonitor is giving different core temps than AMD Overdrive. Another situation where I don't know who to trust, I wanna believe HW Monitor, because 30 minutes of hardcore Prime95 yeilds only 52 C, but Overdrive is reading 56 C on idle.....Any ideas?
