New build

Thread Starter
Hi, I need to buy parts for a pc for my brother... I've built a few before but I haven't been keeping up with the new products etc in the last year, so I need some advice. I really appreciate it. I have this typed so that the cost of below is about $900, and I have other options/upgrades with the additional cost in parentheses, so please tell me if any are particularly worth the additional money

CM Storm Scout or HAF 922 (+17) or LIAN LI PC-K62 (+10) or Storm Sniper (+52)
i5-2500k
CM 212+ or XIGMATEK Dark Knight (+25) or Antec Kuhler H20 620 (+37) or Noctua NH-D14 (+52)
6950 (which brand?)
G.SKILL Ripjaws DDR3-1600 4 GB or 8GB (+20)
Biostar TP67XE
Rosewill Green Series 630W
SG Barracuda 1 TB 7200 RPM or SAMSUNG Spinpoint 1TB (+15) or Hitachi 7200 RPM 1.5 TB (+0)
SH-222 optical drive

also for case fans, which are better out of
Noctua NF-P12 or Zalman ZM-SF3 or Scythe Gentle Typhoon

Thanks

I would go with the NH-D14 cooler and Scythe Gentle Typhoon fans.

This is a long shot, but if you live near a MicroCenter you can get a 2500k for $180 and get $40 off any motherboard when purchased together. I would pay the extra for 8GB of ram. Everything else seems good.

As for the case, I am a big fan of the Silverstone Raven RV03 ($140 on amazon). Spectacular cooling, amazing cable management, and one sexy looking case if I say so myself.

NH-D14 would make a big difference over, say dark knight for the $25?

no microcenter near me, but might as well pay like $15 for the extra 4 gb... dirt cheap, i remember when it was like gold

looks like a nice case, but i might just let him choose

thanks!

also, is 630W enough? not sure which brand of 6950 also

Dark Knight is a pretty decent cooler. Keep in mind that this is just one person's result, your actual performance will vary. It did a lot better than I expected in this particular test. For the most part, the NH-D14 would keep your CPU a bit cooler.

The 630W Rosewill Green is a very good choice for this build. It's a recommended unit, but it has a really awesome price.

Anyway, the NH-D14 is huge. Although, it is among the best air coolers on the market.

By contrast, the Frio isn't huge but yet I am extremely impressed by its performance.

A Sandy Bridge build with the 2500K or 2600K is significantly more powerful and faster right now.

Welcome to the forum

I don't think it's a good time to buy AMD right now. The 2500k can be purchased for under 200 (Was $150 a few days ago at Fry's) and it outperforms AMD's best desktop processor is virtually all general purpose + gaming benchmarks. The 2500k also overclocks better to further push that performance lead. Most of all, he'll be able to upgrade to Ivy Bridge in the future while an AMD upgrade would require an AMD3+ for Bulldozer.

Non OCK because the OCK version is only compatible with 130mm fans which seem to be impossible to find anywhere. All I can find are 120mm and 135mm, but no 130mm.

So, I went with the non OCK and I am extremely happy with it.

I would say the Samsung Spinpoint F3 has the best reviews of the HDD's you listed.
