Hi, quick question regarding this setup(1 ssd + 2 raid 1 HDD) for a future AMD build (using some future 900 series motherboard with amd SB950)

I have heard some conflicting information about whether or not setting a controller to RAID mode makes all non-raided devices set to AHCI. In this case, I would set the native 6gbps SB controller to raid, and would install my OS onto the SSD before then installing the raid 1 HDD. Would this work? Moreover, would the SSD lose trim/any other important functionality if i were to do this?

I don't know about your board but you need the SSD set as AHCI and install the OS with no other drives bar the Optical.

Depending on your bios & MOBO, you need the two HDD's set in Raid if you can't split your SATA ports in this way you may need a RAID controller. There is also windows disk management that will do the array but performance is not as good.

I first set my rig up with ports 1-4 set in RAID and the SSD showed up as a normal HDD no trim or anything. OCZ toolbox denied it's existence!

Please bear in mind this is what I have found from doing my build it is not concrete but might be of help.

It's probably best to install on the lone SSD in RAID mode rather than AHCI, if he intends to have a RAID array.

Right, I understand I need to install my OS onto my SSD first (before attaching the other HDD's).

I'm just asking, does a single drive(in my case, my SSD) on a RAID sata controller default to AHCI mode? (900 series AMD motherboard)

I don't know for your SATA controller.

But some drivers (like Intel's ICH10R and beyond) do seem to handle lone drives in RAID mode like AHCI drives. They even pass along TRIM commands as long as the SSD isn't part of an array.

I have an Intel DH67CL mobo. There are three chipset SATA modes: IDE, AHCI, and RAID. When RAID is enabled, AHCI is also enabled. While this information does not apply directly to your AMD build hopefully it will help shed some light on your question.
