RMA?
Screw going through RMA lol, I'll just go back to my local Fry's tomorrow and exchange it for a new one. Sucks that I got a dud, seems like my long crap luck with computer hardware will be with me for the rest of my life.

Yeah, I would re-apply some TIM. My 580 SC idles at about 40c. Tops out at 85c after an hours or so.
thats hot for stock clocks, those temps are closer to what i get at my 900core core OC after an hour or more of bfbc2 on high settings.... Although gotta remember some of these guys have non reference designs so they idle at cooler temps.

Mine idles at around 47c with fan at lowest setting, if the AC is off the thing will shoot up to 50-60c on idling.

Although even on days when the AC is off and i am using my 900 core OC, the card does tend to get toasty even with fan cranked all the way up to 85.

With the AC on and when using my 900 core OC i dont rise above 80C, with fan on 75-85 usage.

To be honest there is probably nothing wrong with your card, these things do not really cool that well, compared to some non reference designs like the direct cuII from Asus.

I wouldnt be terribly surprised if you got around the same temps even with a new card.
Did you increase you fans at all? If your ambient room temp is high these cards heat up quite quick.

I got a solution if you got $62 and tools. Hole spacing is probably different on the 580 so you would just have to mark and drill the holes.

This cools my GTX470 that clocks up to 915mhz with increased voltage. idles at 33-34c depending on temps inside, and load in furmark 47c. 2 120mm fans on the radiator..push pull set up.

My evga ds 580 idles at 45 and max around 65 during hours of gaming @ 850/1700. I dont have my side panel with a fan on either so im sure it would drop quite a bit if I did.

From my survey of reference GTX580 reviews in the net, I gather:-

a. Idle temp: usually about 10-20C above ambient.
The reason for such a (wide) range is that the idle temp does not increase linearly as the ambient temp. Rather, for every degree C rise in ambient temp, there is about 1-2 degrees rise in GPU temp.

b. Load temp: usually about 30-40C above Idle temp.
This is with the default fan profile.
If the case has well managed airflow, the figure would get closer to the 30C delta mark while cases with average airflow would get you closer to the 40C delta mark.

So, a few things to check:-
1. ambient temp
2. fan profile
3. case's airflow (internal and external)

GTX 580 Heat Issue Is.

Does not compute. 's are for words like it's (it is) - abbreviations, or after a persons name, eg, Linkin93's post is a lesson on spelling and grammar.

As for your card, change the thermal paste. Use isoprop/arcticlean and apply some decent paste, AS5, IC Diamond 7, Shin etsu, etc.

hows the airflow in your case, I see these threads all the time about people complaining about their cards when their case isn't cutting it for airflow or they have fans set up wrong in their cases

Air flow is fine, even if my airflow was terrible there would still be no excuse for it to idle at nearly 65C. Definitely something wrong with the card.

Going to return it tomorrow, and probably pick up a dcu asus 580. I don't feel like getting another bad evga one, for all I know my store got a bad batch of them or something.
