Dedicated Game Server?

Thread Starter
Hey guys Im thinking about building a computer for running some game servers. Not sure about any game yet but I was thinking Battlefield 3 (I know its not out yet), Modern Warfare 3 (if it has dedicated servers), Minecraft maybe? Anyways there are a few games I am considering just giving you an idea of what I want to run. I would also like to be able to run more than one server at a time at least 2 and I want them to run well.

Hardware wise I am not quite sure what to get but I dont want to go to expensive with it and stay under $1000. I was thinking something like this
AMD Phenomâ„¢ II X6 1090T $170
Gigabyte GA-890FXA-UD5 $182
GSKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB $50
Western Digital 1TB Caviar Black $80
DVD Drive $30
8400GS Free
Corsair CMPSU-500CX V2 500 Watt $50
Cooler Master CM 690 II Advanced $80

Which would come to $720 with tax allowing me to add some upgrades if necessary.

Network wise I am not quite sure what kinds of speed I will need but from what I have found on my own it seems I will require high upload speed. Here is the speed that I was looking at. It has 5 Mbps Upload and 100 Mbps Download. Will that be fast enough for what I want?

Looking forward to your input

At a very quick glance, the hardware looks decent.

While it varies from game to game, and how many players you host, your upload speed will become a concern. 5 up may sound like a lot, (and on some games it may work fine) but I'd personally try and find one with higher upload speed. 10-15 up should work out quite nicely unless you're gonna host a bunch of people (20-30) at the same time. That's just a rough estimate.

I'm sure there are others out there who have their own game servers who can help you out more than I can. Just figured I'd throw my in.

All of that looks pretty solid for a game server. I'd look into getting more RAM just because it's so cheap these days. Your internet connection will be the real limitation. Not only because 5mbit up isn't a lot (for residential connections it's above average, but lacking for servers), but routing between residential connections isn't exactly the best, resulting in high pings even if bandwidth is sufficient.

If you want to get really serious about hosting some servers yourself, I'd look at colocating the server in a datacenter. This will take some know-how, but the end result will be quite a bit better.

You most likely won't be able to host a BF3 server. In BC2 you aren't able to.

Looks like hosting wont be doable for me due to internet upload speed limitations .

Do you absolutely have to go with Shaw? If so, that really sucks that 5 up is the best that they offer.

I don't really have to go with shaw but the upload speeds for other ISPs really are not that much better here from what I've found.

5mbit up would give you a game...maybe. Regardless of that, DICE made is pretty clear they aren't allowing people to host their games (Battlefield), same with the COD series recently. If you wanted to host a minecraft server you probably could, that or some source game.

At this point it's all about your upload.
