Is my GTX 275 the bottleneck?

Hey Guys,

Recently decided to build up my PC a bit and get it to a gaming level, and i found in WoW (of all things) i've noticed my first speedbump in performance-wise on the computer, as with lots of people it gets a bit laggy and going down to 25FPS.

I'm leaning towards the old GTX 275 being the cause of my lag, however i'm really open to any suggestions for what else i should upgrade next..

CPU: i5 650
GFX: Gigabyte GTX 275
RAM: 4GB DDR3 (pretty standard ddr3 might i add, nothing special)
Mainboard: Gigabyte Mid-Range (nothing flash, but hey it does the job.. although it only has 2 ram slots.)
HDD: 7200RPM 500GB
PSU: 460W Coolermaster

Now i only want to upgrade 1-2 parts right now but i want them to be a substantial gain in performance for gaming.

I'm leaning towards the possibility that the low spec PSU may be robbing the GTX275 some power, however i don't want to go replacing the PSU to find out it wasn't making a difference..

I was going to buy a new PSU and a 6G kit of Corsair RAM, but from what i can gather the RAM will make little to no difference, and the PSU may even make no difference as i mentioned above..

So tell me, if you were in my shoes and you didn't want to spend more than $200-300 USD at this stage, what would you upgrade?

Thanks in advance!

Your core 2 is the problem in WoW for the most part, however I heard turing off shadows or shaders or something in the graphics option helps with those types of slow downs.

It's not a core limit problem, its a core speed problem.

An MMO isn't a great way to judge the performance of a pc. Nearly every MMO I know of can get choppy in busy cities. Their servers just have a hard time keeping up.
Edit: Btw, it's not your psu. If it was your psu not being able to power your system, it'd crash.

If you have the i5 560 now, and not the dual core in your signature, then I would definetly upgrade the GFX. The PSU can easily handle say, a GTX 560.

Are you walking through org or sw and loading a bunch of things in and getting hitching and stuttering? Or are you out in the world and your gpu is maxed and getting just bad frames?

When in a crowded city the game just slows down. its not your computer or anything, the game is just SLOW when theres 100 people around.

When I played i had a 9800gtx+512mb @ 1920x1080 and barely got stuttering, just only when running into a city before everyone loaded in.

You may want to consider your cpu if your gpu usage drops out when the fps do as well.

I made a thread about cpu performance in WoW specially sandy bridge performance vs Phenom II, if you care to view it.

Thanks Guys,

yeah ignore the signature.. old old old old system i cant be bothered updating (Ill try to do it later)

I understand MMO's arnt the best judge simply because of how much content is loading, but it's an FPS drop and nothing to do with latency.. so i'm having a hard time deciphering that it's gonna be nothing i can do about it.. and i don't want to drop the Ultra settings its set to in all honesty..

The lag in that game isnt really the deciding factor however, i'm moreso getting into heavier games and i don't want to buy the game and find out the computer can't handle it.. i would rather be 2 steps in front, even if everything im playing at the moment is fine.

@ The upgrade to 560 comment, do you really think this is the best idea? Everyone i looked at on the net said the GTX275 is BETTER than GTX560, and unless i go to a 570 it's not even an upgrade..

@ The PSU comment, thanks.. i didn't realise if it wasnt getting enough power it would literally crash.. it hasnt done that yet.. touchwood.

I would of thought an i5 would be a more than capable CPU? Although i'm not the expert.. what do you recommend in this case?

yeah only in main cities or heavy content.. but as i said, that's just an example..

For max fps in high population areas, try turning off the shadows thing - hopefully that helps if not...

Ugh, try overclocking your chip to the max.

I've seen those chips doing 4.4Ghz on water, not sure what kind of cooling you have... But getting it to or past the 4Ghz mark would probably help bring it up into the 30's at the very least.

Sell your i5 650, mobo and ram, put some cash together and get an i5 760, Gigabyte P55-USB3 and Corsair XMS3 RAM.

That's hardly viable considering the "Only want to spend $200-$300" thing haha..

i may end up doing a full rebuild in the future, however at the present i have a feeling my mainboard is fine.. I can always chuck in some really high end RAM and upgrade the CPU, but i don't know if this is going to effect much at all.. or if it's more worthwhile to get a new graphics card.
