Nikon D5000

Thread Starter
So I recently purchased a Nikon D5000 camera because I got it at a hell of a price. I have never used a DSLR yet alone a standard SLR camera, so I'm just learning how to use this thing. Any advice you guys can give me on it? some pointers and tips would be helpful.
It's the D5000 W/18-55VR lens kit

a few other questions I have is what does af-s mean? f/3.5-5.6G mean?
I know this is all terminology I should and need to know so any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance

af-s = auto focus single; good for taking pictures of stills, it'll focus onto the spot you are on currently. Not good for moving objects, usable though

f/ = f stop, it's how fast the shutter opens and closes. Faster = lets in less light, slower = more light. A faster f/ is better for sunlight, etc. Slower is better for dim rooms.

Most of this is in manuals/photography websites. I'd check out Ken Rockwell's site, he has a lot of introductory guides.

EDIT: I'll probably be corrected on most of this, so don't take anything I say as fact.

Welcome to the D5000 club , it's a very good camera.
The only thing I have my complaints abou is the fact that the screen colors and resolution are rather poor, which gives about no real feedback about the lighting of your picture.

It's happened before when I thought the photo's were great but when reviewing on a pc, they were quite over/underexposed.Allthough it actually enables you to LEARN to take better pictures and not rely on the onboard exposure meter.

Af-s means autofocus single, it's good for outofocussing on still objects/portaits. You focus on a subject, lock on the focus and after that it's locked, even if you move the camera away (while still halfpressing the button). It's good if you'd like te recompose after locking focus.

F is the f-stop, you might want to google that but to make it simple: the lower the number= the more light comes through AND less depth of field (good for macro). The higher the number= the less light comes through AND the more depth of field --> longer shutter speeds are required, good for landscapes.

You'll learn fast. It's a great entry camera and I really like it. It really was the best of its time, and still is because the D5100 which fixes the screen and video capabilities is still very pricey.

Enjoy it, and you'll quickly see that it's very easy to use, but hard to master. If you need some titles for D5000 specific learning books, let me know .

Enjoy

If you're talking about AF-S in the context of the kits lens (my guess), then the full name of your lens is the AF-S Nikkor 18-55 f/3.5-5.6G VR.

In this context, AF-S is Nikon's nomenclature for indicating that your lens has an in-lens focus motor.

f/3.5-5.6 indicates that your lens is variable aperture. At 18 mm the aperture is f/3.5 at max, whereas at 55 mm it's only f/5.6, meaning it's letting less light in. There really is no rule-of-thumb for what apertures to use for what form of photography. Generally a larger aperture isolates your subject more so it's great for portraiture or just highliting what you want your viewer to be looking at. Generally when you're shooting expansive landscapes you'll stop down to get everything in focus. Beyond that, as long as you get the depth of field and shutter speed that you want, it's your choice what aperture you use for an image.

G on a Nikon lens means that the lens is gelded. Older Nikon lenses have a ring that physically controls what aperture the lens will stop down to when you shoot your picture. However, Nikon hasn't needed the rings to work on their cameras since the mid 1990s, so the aperture ring was removed to save cost. G lenses don't always work on older cameras, though.

As far as tips for shooting, just comb through the stickies at the top of the forum. There's some great info there and they also point you toward some other excellent guides.

Thanks everyone. I will read up on as much as I can as I got off work the next two days and will be playing around a lot with this camera so I can get a better feel for it and what I can do with it.

Thanks for the clarification on what the lens and its marking means. Now, time to go read up on some stuff. thanks again
