The reviews are trying to tell you something, Phenom IIs are bottlenecks.

^This, or i7's WON'T be bottlenecks

edit: read this thread from tom's. Somepeople had first hand experience with 6850 crossfire and had no problems.

In my testing with my 6970 @ 990/1500 I notice bottlenecking if I run below 3750/2400nb. That would be roughly on par with your 6950cf. I would recommend a PHII @3800 or higher, but a C2 will have problems getting there. Run the cf if you want, but I recommend upgrading to either a cheap x6 or grab a x4/6 bulldozer on launch.

Will it work, yes
Will it be at it's best, no

Tom's reviews are mediocre. Their forums are awful.

Go there if you want to be recommended 600W PSUs for your single 6950.

Lol - thank you. By this logic above you, because review website A uses an i7 990x @ 4.6ghz, they're trying to tell you that anything below such is a bottleneck. Clearly review websites, when reviewing GPU's, attempt to remove ALL possible CPU bottlenecks, and then a ton more, so that GPU's are the ONLY influential factor. This obviously does not mean that you need this level to eliminate the bottleneck.

Let's not bash tom's. The link I posted was not a review. It was based on personal experience from the members. Also there are videos on youtube of someone running crysis 2 on his phenom ii x4 with 6850 xfire here. Keep in mind he is recording via fraps with crysis on ultra + textures.

good clear info - thanks a lot

I'll probably stick it out with the CPU for now then, and decide on a 1090t later on, once bulldozer is out and someone is selling one cheap. I want to avoid a platform upgrade for at least another year or two, so the 1090t is the logical evolution for my system.

I have an unlocked 740 and i have it 3552 mhz at 1.44-1.48v
My north bridge is 2695mhz cpu-nb 1.48v with my ram at 1632 cl7 (hyper x 1800 cl9)
8 hours prime blend stable and 1week stable folding.
You need to keep the temps down on these chips.
Also what is your nb volts and how many ram slots have you filled?

Edit: also get a small fan to blow some air on those vrms as it will also help provide cleaner power....

Bottleneck is such a overused word. You're going to get more fps with a better processor pretty much all the time even from i7 to i7. The point is a Phenom II isn't even close to any i7 in gaming performance. Every i7 can pretty much match other i7s to within a couple of fps when overclocked.

Perfect help - that youtube user has crossfire 6850's on a PhII x4 @3.6ghz. EXACTLY my setup. Couldn't ask for better help.

And he was running Crysis 2 Ultra + texture pack smooth (except for what appeared like loading jitters at the start). Nice
