Complete Build Log-Zotac 560ti/Corsair H70 - Page 6

There was no addional cooling for Vram or VRM other than that stock cooling plate covering the pcb. The underside does have thermal pads between vrm, vram and that cooling plate. Nothing was blowing on the cooling plate. The H70 base covered the IHS and overlapped the cooling plate by about half inch on all sides, this perhaps help to keep the plate cooler too.

For all those who were wondering about the ATi/AMD cards, I measured, and have put in my order for a Kuhler 920. Will update you guys when parts arrive. I hope I measured correctly bc its going to be a tight fit. weirdsmiley.gif

+rep to the op. I'm not trying to thread hack btw lol.

thank you for the +rep PixelFreakz

Good to see the red team joining in on this. I did post on the ati cooling section for interest but the thread fell to the wayside sadly, looks like your going to be the liaison for this club in the ATI cooling section thumb.gif

Ps. interest and comments will never be consitered thread hacking lol, your more than welcome to join in on the discussion and in fact i well come all the comments. I hope that youll add some pics for us green guys of the build. It will be most interesting how your temps will be affected with this mod, id think your going to be most impressed.

Let me be the first to welcome you to the club. Ive not done a ati card myself but the many others who have im sure are more than willing to help a fellow modder out so please ask any questions you have and we will be here to help. Also a big +rep for you when complete biggrin.gif

cravenmild is cravenWild for attempting a mod like this. Very good work sir! thumb.gif I am doing some research for this on an Asus Matrix 580 Platinum. I will hold off til I deduce the cause of a fan problem on this card, in case I need to RMA it. It runs 100% on both fans all the time, and adjustments with GPU Tweak and saving to profile have no effect on them. Searching the ROG forums as well as here to find a fix.

Rep + to you for good work, and good worklog!

Thanks for the +rep, that is most kind of you SgtHawker

About your Matrix and i only ask because when i first bought mine i did this....is the 100% fan button pressed? LOL, i know it sounds silly but these dcll coolers are so quiet compaired to what one would expect that its easy to overlook. I ran my Matrix 100% the first week, i didnt know, software could not change fan speed and i was about to rma the card also. Even if the button is not lit up red press it just the same as the led light below may be defective.

The second suggestion for the fan issue (because this also happened to me) is that if the wire from the gpu fans to the pcb is not pressed fully into the receptical on the pcb then you may have issues with the fan speeds. One fan can be controlled while the other cant....or both cant be controlled. That wire will look like its pressed in all the way and it does not make a click sound ether, press on it anyways with your fingernail just to double check.

I hope your not going to have to rma that card. It was mentioned on the rog forums that there are very few cards left for sale and they just have their remaining stock held for rma purposes.

Good luck

The mod works well for the Matrix cards as the Matrix has no retail waterblocks for them being they are nonreferance custom pcb. When your/if your going to do the mod and need any help feel just come here and ask any questions you have. Retaining the shroud can be difficult with this card but another user here (williampv) also did his matrix card and used a different method than i did so youll get to pick which one you like....or find another way lol.

Thanks again SgtHawker, glad you liked the mod biggrin.gif

Thanks for the tip on the fan craven. I found this after the 3rd or 4th page of nvidia cards over on the ROG forum that the100% fan button may cause this issue, and that was it. Brain Freeze!

I will read up on modding the card for a bit to decide on how to progress. thumb.gif

Lol thanks cravin. I guess I feel important now that I am the de facto liaison for the red team tongue.gif I have very little modding experience so I'll be sure to ask if I need any help. I'll link a build log on this post once I get all my parts in and have time to start.

I was a little worried about my VRAM though. Should I be? Or is the stock heatsink enough to keep the modules cool with the fans blowing at the card?
The only reason I decided to try this is because when I laid my unused H50 mounting ring, which is supposed to be the same as the kuhler 920 and the H70, the screw holes on my 6970 were pretty much in line with the mounting ring. This means that the kuhler on my vga card would be possible, but would require the use of tie straps, as manufacturing a bracket would be impossible with what tools I had.

Awesome work, I have a non-reference GTX 460 that needs a cooling solution...

Fancy trying this myself - have some more "rep" Sir !

Thank you, +reps are always nice, very kind of you 2002dunx biggrin.gif

Glad you liked my log. Its a pretty cool mod and does not take much time to do....or cost lol. Its really nice to have an option for watercooling on non referance cards.

@Pixel, as yet no problems with vram, vrm but no one has done a ati card yet. Even with the nvidia cards we have real way to tell the long term effects, one of the risks of modding lol. We are all test subjects at this point. I have not heard of a single card becoming runed by this mod if that helps any. There was one person here...a moderator for the forums, dont want to say the name as im not sure which one, id have to go through the pages to see which one. Anyways that person was using a h50 and did mention that they were getting artifacting, i think his chip temps were fine but artifacting just the same. When they returned the card to stock cooling the artifacting went away. The H50 does have limited cooling abilitys, fine for a stock cpu but a gpu really throws off the heat and im not sure if it is fully upto the task of cooling a oc card. Cant say for sure as there are others who do use a H50 on the gpu with no bad effects (different mounting method). IDK, just my thoughts on that. Nothing fact or anything.

Good point, the earlier problems I had with temp fluctuation on one of the cards was due to gaps between the cooler head and IHS. After the IHS removal project I made sure to get a good TIM application and used pliers to secure the zips as tight as possible. Whenever im gaming both 480's cranked to 850-875 and they never reach over 50c. thumb.gif
