Power surge forces new build. Help!

Thread Starter
Hi Guys, A few days ago we had a power surge and all my computer components got fried. Luckily the insurance will pay for this but they will take months to pay.

My 5770 survived so I will be using that as the gfx card in this build. Please let me know if the below is alright. I'm hoping to game, video encoding, C++ script compiling and eventually add a second card and overclock. Also I wondered if its better to get a Z68 board instead of a p67?

Thanks.
Silky Smooth.

Also I was thinking should I ditch the i5-2500k and the SSD and just get a i7-2600k and use the spinpoint as the bootdisk instead? I have heard they are very comparable to SSD's in speed.

The i7 is only slightly faster for gaming, hyperthreading is the main benifit of the i7 & it dosn't sound like you'll use it. Get the SSD if you've got the money. Pick your motherboard based on the slot layout as both chipsets are basically the same. Z68 has onboard video. The picture is not that good but I think you've chosen Tri channel memory which is wrong for either chipset, you need some good fast dual channel.

I picked 2 x 4gb 1866mhz (dual channel)

So basically z68 is not needed if you use a graphics card? Is the motherboard I picked ok?

The only time I would ever "suggest" Z68 is if you are worried about your video card going out and you need something to hold you off in the mean time.

Yes, the P8P67 Pro is a very solid motherboard. I know a lot of OCN'ers that use it and recommend it.

As far as Spinpoint vs. SSD, there's not even a comparison in performance there. Any SSD will blow it out of the water, but it's up to you to decide if the performance difference is worth it vs. getting a better processor, but that's another decision of performance usage as well.

5770 only uses around 100w, that PSU is massive overkill even if you add another 5770. However, That is a nice price for that unit.

Though I'm curious of difference in quality between Toughpower XT 775w & Toughpower Grand 750w anyone?

Stick with the P67, It's always best to avoid anything as new as Z68 anyway & the only difference is onboard video. If you've got a bit more to spend on a cooler I can personally recommend the Corsair H80, it's quite a bit better if you're overclocking.

Okay cheers mate... Just found out that my video card is indeed shot... Not what I was expecting but I do have a spare ATI HD 4650 that I can use until I have saved for a juicy 6950 2gb.

Would this PSU be okay? I don't want to spend that much but I still want a modular one with highish wattage to allow upgrades
