Computer freezing due to cpu?

Thread Starter
My computer would freeze and restart itself usually when I first boot it up. If I open a lot of programs it may freeze but only right after it boots. I can open as many programs as I can a few hours after it boots and it will be fine. Could the freezing be caused by my cpu? The i7 920 runs at high 70 low 80C with 10% load. Any help is appreciated.

The temperatures are really high, you want them to be in the 40's (Celsius).
Keep those temps up and its going to fry.

What heatsink do you have?
How was it mounted?
What thermal paste did you use?

Your PC will (should) auto shut off when your 920 reaches 105c (or 100c, I don't remember)

Stock cooler in combination with those high ambient temps is going to result in a very poor cooling properties. Get an air conditioner and a better heatsink.

So what heatsink would you recommend under $50.

A used H50 normally run for $50 or under and for that price it is a nice deal.

H50s are a pain to mount though. If you can, grab an H60, it'll perform slightly better, and installing them is a breeze.

I wonder why the H50 is more than the H60. That's really weird.

Those are some of the better ones you can get, and are suited more for a compact space. Something like a Mugen would work well, Ven-X, one of the new HR-02 Machos are also good. You have quite a few choices.
