Graphics card upgrade path recommendations

post #1 of 5

I am trying to get an idea of how I should plan upgrades to my graphics card. The end goal is to be able to run Skyrim, ME3, and maybe BF3 on max and ~60 fps when they come out. I know its impossible to know what it will take to get this performance when they are not even out yet but I feel like reasonable guesses can be made.

Right now I have a GTX 460 and a Radeon 5870, and I can't sell the 460. Heres what I'm thinking.
  • First I could sell the 5870 and SLI 460s, however I don't think this will give me the performance that I'm looking for.
  • I could keep the 460 and use it in another computer, and run 5870s in xfire, however I don't know if this would have enough performance either.
  • Or I could sell the 5870, use the 460 in the meantime, and buy a newer card when the games come out.

Any ideas as to what these games will take to run at these settings yet, or what you think my best option would be?

2 5870 should be beasty enough for you.
Edit: Btw, I've seen them under $100 on Newegg Open Box, so keep an eye out.

The game I worry about is BF3. BFBC2 get ~90 fps with xfire 5870s, so if the the new frostbite 2 engine is 50% more demanding than the current one then I would be at 60fps... so its possible. I feel that ME3 will run fine either way. And I have no idea what to expect from Skyrim...

I would love to get a Open Box one, but by the time I find out some more cards have been put up there they are all gone

@OP

I would sell your ati 5870 because they're worth a lot because of ***coin thingy.
Sell both of your cards and you should have enough money to buy amd 6970.
That 5870 should be at least $200 and gtx 460 for $100.

or

Try those PNY 465 refurb from newegg for $99 and try to unlock them to gtx 470. I heard a lot of OCN ppl were able to flashed them to gtx 470. SLI GTX 470!
