OC Became Unstable?

Thread Starter
I had my 2500K stable at 4.5, LLC level 7, vcore at 1.260. On load I would read about 1.30-1.31v.

I modded my case today to insert a top fan. Afterwards I ran 5run sets of IBT 6 times with various variations (front dust covers off/on, top fan intake/outtake), to see what would give me the lowest temps.

On my 8th run after double checking some things I got a blue screen within 1 run. This was strange since I was stable for the entire time before, and have run 20passes fine in the past. Also with the new configuration temps were lower.

I ended up having to go to 1.280 to get 5 passes again. Is there any explanation for why I would suddenly become so unstable?

IBT/LinX isn't a very good indication of stability for Sandybridge to begin with. I've had overclocks go through 200 runs of LinX Maximum with AVX but then only to fail in Prime95 Blend.

Sometimes I've found there are almost "stages" of overclock "burn-in". A few times I've had to adjust settings on various overclocks (including a Sandy Bridge build i did for a friend) due to their once being stable, then becoming unstable.

It invariably seems to stop at some arbitrary point. My system took 2 times. The Sandy Bridge build only 1. An older 775 build had 3 or 4 separate occasions.

Unless someone states otherwise, I would adjust your overclock and assume the above. You are WELL within specifications and your temps at those levels MUST be acceptable (right?)

Regarding the comments above ^^ - OP, are you running service pack 1 and the IBT pack that tests Sandy Bridge particularly strongly? If not, this is a good suggestion. You should really be using Prime95 Blend to test overall system stability, as well as Small FFT for CPU, as well as Intel BurnTest and the like too - the more the merrier!

I am using SP1 with Windows 7. I will check again on the IBT I am using. Max temp with the new vcore is 72C after 5 runs on high.

I'll try Prime95 as well. Regarding the stages you mentioned, I've been running 4.5 24/7 at the previous vcore for 2 weeks now, just found it very strange it decides at this time to go unstable during the IBT runs.
