Hardware firewall suggestions?

Thread Starter
I'm looking for suggestions for a hardware firewall. As of now, I'm running untangle in virtual on my server. It was fun to set up and it has its kinks, but I want to toy with something new. I'm thinking a $300 budget, if that's feasible. Ideas? Thanx.

Cisco ASA 5505 is about $325 on the egg. That's a top notch hardware firewall in that price range.

Overkill for most home networks.

Sorry took so long to respond. Work keeps gettin in the way.

Sweet firewall, and a little overkill is what I'm looking for. But I'll need 1gbps.

Unless you have an internet connection to make the rest of us weep, just use a gige switch for the devices you want gige for and uplink that to the firewall. I don't think you'll find anything better than a typical linksys/netgear/dlink home firewall that has gige ports for that budget.

That 5505 is an enterprise class firewall shoehorned into a SOHO form factor.

Lol, no, 25 mb. But the firewall will be the center of all the switches.

You know in most situations, the network is not the resource at risk; rather, it is the endpoints of the network that are threatened.
The hosts with the most programs on should be isolated behind a firewall. Remember the bigger the program the bigger the security risk

what do you think a hardware firewall will provide that Untangle won't?

For your network spending cash on a hardware firewall is a complete waste of time, effort and money, especially if you already have Untangle set up. The only thing that might make it worthwhile would be if you're looking to learn Cisco kit to increase your employment prospects or similar.

It's about learning something new.

Put it this way your not going to get an ASA 5505 or a PIX 515e and just "learn" how to write the config for it.
