MSi Afterburner memory overclock

Thread Starter

As seen here, the memory overclock in afterburner maxes out below 3000MHz, but in places like guru3d they're hitting 4300MHz. What's with the disparity in these values?

varies per card. Some cards have more mem. I can go up to 2730 with my 560ti.

All GPU's overclock differently. No two cards ever overclock the same. It all depends on what you get.

MSI Afterburner has "Maximum Factory overclock" and they set 3000mhz as the max you can easily disable this by doing the following
To enable the unofficial overclocking in this version it is necessary to edit the MSIAfterburner.cfg file located in the installation directory of AfterBurner (typically Program Files (x86) MSI Afterburner):

You need to alter the following:
Seek UnofficialOverclockingEULA field and add following text:
I confirm that I am aware of unofficial overclocking limitations and fully understand that MSI will not provide me any support on it
Set UnofficialOverclockingMode to 1 to keep PowerPlay active (may not work on old ASICs), 2 to traditionally disable PowerPlay or to 0 to temporary disable unofficial overclocking path
Using the unofficial overclock method opens up more freedom in terms of voltages and clock ranges, it however also can open a can of worms in terms of stability or weird issues.

I'm getting artifacting when my I increase my memory clock even a little.

so my card (factory memory 2000MHz) can really only be clocked 2GHz slower than the one G3D tested?

you may need more voltage. not sure how to increase memory voltage in afterburner though. maybe it is linked to the core voltage.

lol. GDDR5 has twice the bandwidth as GDDR3 so GDDR5 at 2000Mhz is the same as GDDR3 at 4Ghz and they said it in terms of GDDR3 speed thats why they said 4Ghz.

It's probably because they are using this "effective memory clock" rather than what other people use. Gpu-z shows something around 1000mhz. Msi afterburner would be double of what gpu-z shows and is usally what I go buy. When i ran my 460, I would say that it was running the memory at 2200mhz. Gpu-z shows 1100mhz. I call baloney on that maxed slider stuff up there.

He beat me to it. This is your explaination exactly. so 4300Mhz divided by 2 gives you a memory clock of 2150 in afterburner. As for getting these higher, you will need more voltage.
