Soundstage is the degree of space in which sounds from different directions are heard. Basically imagine a band and how big the stage is, is the soundstage. If it is small, they are more crowded together. If it is wide, they are positioned further apart. That is soundstage width. There's also soundstage depth and height.

The AD700 will leak sound, both in and out.

What's also important in directional based gaming such as FPS's is imaging. Imaging is the accuracy in which directional cues are replicated within the soundstage.

Basically think of it like this: You are putting sounds into a box in 3D. Soundstage is how big the box is. Imaging is how tidy the sound is arranged in the box.

Having heard both the HD555 and AD700, AD700 for both gaming and music however the HD595/ HD555 is more balanced sounding however still light on bass. it's basically anemic bass in the AD700 vs. recessed bass of the HD555/HD595

I have the A700s and they sound great (though they are my first pair of REAL headphones) I went with the A700s instead because they're closed and, living in a dorm, I needed the better noise cancellation. Plus I like a little extra bass (gotta love dubstep)

Ok. So it either (ATH-AD700 vs Audio Technica ATH-A700) or Sennheiser HD595

Between the first 2 which wins? And which is the overall best?

To give you a better idea of what might work for me, I mainly listen to thrash/doom/death metal and rap. I'd play anything also.

Well the A700s will have more bass, which would probably go well with your music taste. But I haven'tt heard the AD700s. When I decided between the two I basically had to decide whether I wanted better soundstage and imaging(AD700) or better bass and noise cancellation(A700)

Alright, to answer the original question of "What's better than the AD700 and under $150?", I'll have to say...multiple Ultrasone headphones. Lively headphones that do a lot of music well and play games well with a decently sized soundstage.

They're a lot more believable music-wise (for most genres) than the AD700 and aren't any worse for gaming than the AD700.
