2600k Overclock situation

Thread Starter
Hi,

I've just built a gaming pc and i've bought an Intel i7 2600k cpu for it.

i am thinking of a 4.5-4.7 overclock for it. that would satisfy all my needs.

now...i've easily achieved 4.5GHz but the problem is that with my voltage on offset -0.35, when i run prime95 my voltage is around 1.265 at full load but when i run a game like crysis 2 my voltage goes up to 1.320 at just 15-20% load.

i would like my voltage to be around 1.3 max and just go down when i dont load my cpu a lot.

something more like this:

idle - 1600ghz - ~1.00 voltage
full load - 4500 - ~3.00 voltage
games use only around 20% of my cpu but the voltage is yet higher than on full load

what can i do?

bios settings:

multiplier - 45
blck - 100
internal pll - disabled
epu power management - enabled
voltage: offset -0.35
llc - medium
cpu pll - 1.725

motherboard : Asus P8P67 PRO B3 REV3.0

if interested in any other info please ask thanks in advance
krz.

Turn offset completely off and make sure C1E is enabled. That'll keep your voltage at the selected voltage even under load, and should decrease once your clock speed decreases (which is what C1E does; decreases clock speed when idling).

You should also fill out your sig rig in the User CP so we can see what cooler you're using.

Don't really need it to drop. The drop in frequency is more than enough to lower the strain on the CPU and lower temps. Follow the initial instructions and see if that works for you. I don't think it's possible to auto-downvolt while idle. At least not without it revving up the volt at load (this being the Auto option)

Also, what batch number is your 2600K? I can't get my 2600K stable at 4.5GHz with anything less than 1.36v. Not bad but not great.

well i cannot set offset off i can only set it manual on 1.300 which results in my cpu sitting at 1.3 at both idle and full load

what's also very interesting is that if i set my voltage on offset at -0.35 and my llc at regular(disabled) it gives me a voltage of ~1.296 under full load and i was stable for 12 hours of prime blend

now if i set my voltage on manual i need at least 1.32 voltage in order for my cpu to be stable..why is that?

also i'd like to add that i don't understand llc perfectly and i'm not sure what to set it at

also i have cpu phase or smt at extreme (above the setting with T.Probe) and C1E enabled while the other two on auto

P.S.: im not sure what batch number is

btw thanks for the quick replies really

If you want the same load vcore than prime95 on light load(not idle) with offset use ultra high llc + c3/c6 disabled.
lower the llc is,higher the vcore will be on light load compared to prime95/linx.
So the best llc for that is ultra high.
Now with c3/c6 enabled its different because the vcore will drop on light load so you might bsod while you're fully stable at 100% usage on prime95.
The best llc with c3/c6 enabled to avoid this issue is regular/medium.
Why ?
Because when c3/c6 are enabled, higher the llc is,lower the vcore will be on light load.
Also with c3/c6 enabled you can use the per core option but honestly its a pain to make these settings stable.
I prefer the first option.
ultra high llc + c3/c6 disabled.
The second option works too but its harder and doesnt worth the pain imo.
Also i think c3/c6 on auto are off on high multi but im not sure so if anyone can confirm.

so if i do the first option i should be able to get something like

light load - ~1.00 vcore - 1600Ghz

full load - max 1.300 vcore - 4500ghz

medium load - ~1.200 vcore - ????Ghz

or anything similar to that?

EDIT: also the 2600k can only be either at 1600ghz on idle and 4500ghz at light/full load? i mean even when i use only 10% of load my cpu frequency jumps to 4500ghz. is that right?

thanks

alright so i've managed to find something here. now i'm running at 4.5Ghz with these settings:

Multiplier: 45
BLCK: 100
EPU: ENABLED
Internal PLL: DISABLED
VCORE: Offset Mode -0.030
CPU PLL: 1.725
CPU Phase: Extreme
C1E: Enabled
Speedstep: Enabled
C3 & C6: Auto
CPU Ratio: 45
LLC: Medium

now...with these settings in prime95 blend im getting 4.5Ghz @ 1.270V and on idle i get 1600Ghz @ ~0.960V

however, when i start up crysis which loads about 20% of my cpu my cpu frequency jumps to 4500 @ 1.310V

why does it need more voltage when on 20% load then on full 100% load?

and why my cpu can either be 1600 or 4500? can't it be anything in between? it can only be lowest speed and full speed?

My temps @ full load : max 69
@ idle: ~35

My H80 is on Silent Mode
thanks
