Need some more space

Thread Starter
Hi, I had originally bought the WD Green 1.5TB for my system, but that was DOA, so instead due to time issues I had to pick up a SG barracuda 1.5 tb 5400 rpm... I know this isn't ideal but I had to do it.
I got 250 gigs left on the hard drive and i'll have to buy another for the added space... I'm wondering what would be the best option, price + performance wise... buy another and put into RAID? Would it work if they were different RPM? etc

thanks

If the disks are different it won't work right. Some say that it can work and it'd work at the lowest common speed, but from my experience it's very hit and miss - more often than not the controller doesn't manage to build a stable RAID 0 / 1 array. JBOD should work, but what's the benefit in that...
My take: Samsung F4G 2TB. It's cheap, has amazing sequential throughput, but being a 5400RPM it has high access times. I wouldn't put an OS or games on a F4G, but anything else should work just as fast as on a 7200RPM drive. They're quiet, cold and consume only 12W under load (vs about 18-24W for a 7200RPM) which may matter depending on the rest of your build.

HDD RAID? Better get a Velociraptor 600GB - fast access times and good sequential speed. Faster yet an SSD, but that's a whole different subject.

I agreed with most of what you said up until this line. Your power consumption rates are actually off by at least 100%.

The most power hungry HDD out there (WD Black 2TB?) consumes about 11 watts. Well, maybe the 15k RPM drives consume more - but among desktop drives, it's the most power hungry model.

So if I get another drive, I should just keep it as a C: 1.5TB and F: 2TB or something like that? Is there a way to clone the C if I wanted to spend more money to a SSD and higher performance HDD without ruining all my games, programs, etc?

Sure. You can clone your 1.5TB OS drive to an SSD... you just need one that can fit all that data.

Reinstalling fresh is probably going to be easier. You can pick and choose which games go on the SSD and what goes on your HDDs.

I see... might as well anyways, HDD is a lot cheaper, as well as SSD. Good yearly update...
But how do I go about doing this, I have 1.1 TB of movies, games, music, books, and programs on the 1.36 TB disk, so I obviously can't put all that on one SSD. Should I (like you say) just clean install windows on the SSD, and what else to put on the SSD? I do use this for gaming, so would it be wise to put the most used games on the SSD? And then use another drive to put the other stuff (movies, music, ...)... how to configure that, just leave as SSD and HDD or ...
Also (sorry, I know it's a lot of questions) which SSD and HDD would you recommend, probably two HDD in RAID 0 right, because that 1.1 TB is getting bigger as I type
But I am a total noob when it comes to these things, so explain it so (and which program to use to clone my stuff)

Thank you

Crucial C300/M4 SSDs are great.

If you get an SSD, unplug your other drives and reinstall Windows onto the SSD. Then plug them back in, adjust the boot order in the BIOS to boot off your SSD, then boot Windows. Once in Windows, assign drive letters via Disk Management. (Your HDDs will probably have their drive letters already)

I'd keep your SSD for OS, apps, and most played games. Shove everything else onto the HDD(s).

64 GB enough for the SSD? I'm cheap.

Ok, so I will have the SSD with that stuff on it, and then as for hard drives, what would you recommend? Two 1.5 TB's? 3 1 TBs? 3 TB? In what RAID?
(edit: or should I just forget about the SSD and buy 3 x Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB and put in RAID 0?)

And how would I go about cloning my current hard drive to the new ones once I get them... just copy and paste, or something fancier

Thanks for your help

An SSD large enough would cost over $2000.

(Hence my recommendation to reinstall Windows on the SSD)

64GB should be plenty, but you won't be cloning your OS drive onto it. After reinstalling windows, you can copy and paste some stuff over - but you'll have to reinstall your favourite games.
