Shogun 2 battle strategy??

Thread Starter
Long story short. I'm defending one of my newly claimed cities from the Asari. I'm outnumbered (I've got 1600 men they got around 2000). Bad thing is they have a crapload of archers that will be able to kill most of my men just by shooting arrows nonstop. Good thing is archers are weak warriors. What should I do? should I defend the city or pursue the enemy head on?

You should defend, but if you have cavalry try to see if you can place 3-4 on the outside of the city before the battle starts. The enemy tend to clump their archers by themselves except for 2-3 units, just have the cavalry hit and run the archers. You may lose most of the cav units, but it's usually worth it so you don't get focused in the middle of your fort.

Well try to get loads of cav then try to out flank them, Hopefully reaching their general also, And then finish them off with a head long charge of some yari samurai or better. And mwnwhile also peppering their archers with your own archers.

I have no cavalry units just a ton of samurai (the spearmen). And some swordsmen. The good thing is they brought their daimyo, so if he dies their screwed.

Well I don't have the game, but a long gaming career of strategy games tells me you should either get some cavalry () or use cover to advance your fastest unit to the archers will having the rest hang back in cover from their fire.

Like I said, I haven't actually played Shogun 2, but that's the old warrior/ranged/flying triangle of game strategy.

There's no time to get cavalry, the minute I took over the city and ended my turn they attacked.

I've dealt with this problem before and I don't seem to remember ever losing any sieges where I had an army stationed there.

#1 thing is to set EVERYONE to loose. Damn most important thing right here. Keep it this way for the entire battle. Tighten it up if you want to for melee charges for peeps comin over the walls, but I've never had to do this to win melee engagements in defense sieges.

Second thing is, depending on what level castle it is, fall back to the inner parts. Yes, that means give him the outer parts of the castle for free.

Since it's the AI you thankfully don't have to worry about him waiting to go zero on ammo before he rushes melee in; he'll pepper you for a bit while his melee goes in at the same time.

Depending on how much archers he has, if it's too much either
A. Don't man the walls at all
B. Place crap units at the walls to die
Valuable units DO NOT man the walls. Keep em away and charge in once the first enemies are over the walls.

They tend to focus fire your general. Keep him separated if ya can.

The big structure in the middle is arrow proof. If they're all from one side hide on the other side of the structure.

After the melee dies, you can go outside and kill the archers.

Thanks, I'll try your strategy tomorrow when I play again.

You'll win, you've got good odds. It might not work the first time, but try enough and you'll win, that's the awesome part of being outnumbered.

You've got good units as well: I'm not that familiar with shogun, but it's better to have melee against archers anytime. Their arrows WILL run out, and they WILL have to charge if they want to succeed, if they don't, the battleclock runs out and you've won automatically.

Just defend with the melee, stay away from the wall and be sure to corner every unit climbing up. Don't try to get the general, only if he comes to you and you can take him.

I've once had 6 militia units in napoleon total war, faced against 2000 men full of line infantry and cavalry. I couldn't afford to lose. i've lost that battle about 10 times, but the 11th I was able to get everyone running and had 16 men left myself (men, not units ). I'm stil proud of that to date.

1600 against 2000, while they're mostly archers + you're defending. Dude actually, if you lose that, you're not worth it jk, it'll go smoothly from the first time. You shouldn't be surprised if you actually keep 1100 men from that battle.

all this depending on difficulty ofcourse
