Can someone run me through the basics of Blu-Ray playback on PC?

Hello all,

I'm looking to grab a Blu-Ray drive for my PC and be able to play movies on it. There seem to be a lot of affordable options on Newegg for combination BD/DVD drives that would fit comfortably in one of my several spare 5.25" drive bays.

However, there seem to be some issues with actually playing stuff back in software. Right now, I use vanilla VLC for all my movie playback stuff. But it seems like things aren't as straightforward for Blu-Rays, with stuff like DHCP necessitating updates and different software packages being of different use... If I get an OEM drive, will I be able to use VLC to actually play movies, or will I need to get PowerDVD or CyberLink or something?

Also, I have an HD 6950 that I've been very happy with for gaming, and I'm wondering what relevance (if any) it would have for non-3D Blu-Ray playback. Does my computer automatically offload the workload to the graphics card, or do I need to set that stuff up? Does it only work with certain programs? How can I take advantage of my video card for HD video playback?

Sorry, I'm pretty much completely new to all this. It would just be nice to move a bit beyond simply using a Playstation 3 when I want to play Blu-Rays, and it seems a bit daunting. Thanks for any help!

Sincerely,
John Magnum

Is it appropriate to bump this?

It's fine to bump this. As for playback, I don't use that setup but I hear the newer/newest version of PowerDVD runs bluray? At least that's what I think.

It's pretty simple:

Install Blu-ray drive.

Obtain PowerDVD.

VLC and other similar players can't play Blu-ray because it requires licenses, which basically means the company has to pay for the privilege to play the format.
