Very strange question regarding the 1090t

Thread Starter
Ok so I have a very strange question regarding the 1090t, now this could be a stupid question but I was thinking that perhaps due to the 1090t having 6 cores,

Would i be able to actually overclock it higher past 4ghz, if I only use 4 of its cores? Id like to hear what would happen in terms of performance and whether This sort of thing would actually work?

I've seen chips like yours do 4.3 with all six, its just not worth it. Two physical cores are worth a lot more than 200-300MHz

Yes. To a degree, as it would mean there'd be less heat.

But disabling 2 cores would basically just make it a Phenom II x4 though. So it would ruin the point of getting a hex-core.

It is possible to overclock to 4Ghz as well as using the turbo core technology in the chip. Turbo core automatically disables 3 cores and boosts the other 3 when the system needs it.

I've seen people with a 1090T overclocked to 4Ghz with turbo core set to 4.6Ghz

Disabling cores can indeed increase the maximum stable OC of a chip.

Firstly, there is less heat, and less power consumption, so borderline VRMs can deliver cleaner power, and the CPU is easier to keep cool.

Secondly, the cores disabled have a chance of being weaker than the rest, and an OC is only as strong as the weakest link.

Lastly, fewer cores mean less demand on PLLs and the CPU's NB.

Obviously, overall CPU performance would go down, but single threaded performance would likely improve as you'd likely beable to OC further. It would essentially be like having an X4, as far as clock for clock performance goes.

I don't have any Thubans but, my i7 970 tops out around 4.3GHz on air with all 6 cores and HT enabled. If I disable 4 or 5 cores 4.6-4.7GHz becomes possible.

Very interesting answers, I think tomorrow ill mess around with turbo core a little and set it to about 4.4ghz or so, when does turbo core usually kick in though?

It kicks in when only some of the cores are being used.

Yes, disabling cores can be very beneficial if you don't need them. With 4 cores I need 0.05v less voltage for any frequency and 6C-10C lower temperatures.

Would be better for games, especially if your running SLI or crossfire. I might have to give it a try.

You will likely be able to overclock further. Disabling two cores reduces heat and this may be important on a stock cooler.
If you disable cores, disable 2 and 3 (out of cores 0-5). This will disable the two middle cores, splitting the heat between groups of two cores that will run cooler.
