4870 + Accelero Twin Turbo = hot

Thread Starter
I have a MSI 512mb 4870 (R4870-T2D512), it has a Accelero Twin Turbo on it and it is just running too hot.

I remounted the heatsink a few times (and reapplied the TIM of course) with the same results.. The fan is plugged in using the 12v, and there is a 80mm fan blowing at the VRM's (using the accelero heatsinks).

Ambient temp is about 24c, case airflow is good, q6600 at 3.1ghz idles at 28c and is 45c load. My old 9600gt with a Accelero S2 would idle at about 35c and was 50c under load (no fan) with similar ambient temp.

I would assume that I need to start by replacing the VRM heatsinks, as they can't seem to cool the vrm's properly.

Any suggestions?

I was looking at these:

http://www.petrastechshop.com/enbmpufocora1.html
http://www.petrastechshop.com/enmomohekitp.html

I know there are some resistors near the vrm's so the heatsinks can't be too wide, will have to measure to see exactly how wide they can be.

The original heatsinks are around 10mm tall, and they are pretty close to touching the main heatsink, so I don't think they can be any taller.

Here are some screenshots:

Idle

Load (furmark for 1.5min)

Any idea whats up with the GPU temps? The reviews for this heatsink get much, much lower temps.

I have AC S1 rev2 on my 4870 1GB.
With a Coolink SWIF2 1201 (at ~1000rpm) ziptied to it, idle is 50, and load is around 70°C, with ambient temperature 28°C.
Runs 24/7 since 2 years now. I see no problem with that.

Btw, mine has stock VRM cooling from sapphire still on it, so VRM temps arent going so high, just around 80.

Not sure about idle but as far as i know HD48XX dont have low 2D Clock. As far as load temps i used to get 65C load with HD 4850 with 1.3v with 20C ambient so i think ur fine. Only problem i see is the VRM temps. 100C is pushing it.

Yeah, I'm not all that worried about the GPU temps, but it worries me that most get 50c< load with this heatsink and somehow mine is over 50c idle.

Maybe you need to reseat the paste? I used to have that heatsink, and I know that getting it to mount perfectly on the first try isn't easy. If you had to slide/lift the card while trying to line up the screwholes, that may affect the paste.

I ran my twin turbo on an OC'd 4850 with a voltmod, and my temps were ~38 idle, 55 load.

(A 4850 is exactly the same as a 4870, and I was running it at stock 4870 clocks, with increased voltage in the bios... )

You should check your fan rpm. They are probably only at like 30% by default. A program like MSI afterburner will allow you to set your own custom fan profile, and you only have to run the program once.

Your 100°C VRM could also heat up the surroundings more. Cool them with some heatsink, and your GPU temp may go lower too.

I've reseated it and reapplied the TIM ~5 times with no difference in temp. I've applied TIM to dozens of gpu's over the years.. I'm pretty sure I'm applying it correctly.

I'm using an Accelero Twin Turbo hooked up to 12v, it should be running full speed.

Good point. I'll probably grab those BMR-C1L's if they can fit.

How do you think these would cool?

Nice, how are your temps?

I cut up a heatsink and threw it on there and am now getting better VRM temps, still not exactly cool, but it is probably in the safe range for the VRM's.

I think I may need some better thermal pads for the VRM's, I am currently using the thermal pads used for the ram from the stock heatsink. Also my AS5 is a few years old, I am wondering if that has anything to do with the high GPU temps.

Here are some shots:

Here are the results:

One thing to note, I did not re-apply the thermal paste this time as I was just testing which would explain the higher temps on the GPU.

Edit: Just noticed the memory clocks are at 1000mhz, not sure whats up going on there.
Edit 2: I think I underclocked before and forgot to set it back. After running furmark for 1.5min at 900mhz, the VDDC's are 70, 76, 79.. Much, much better than the old heatsinks.

I am getting about the same temps as you now

If you set profile to lower clocks (and or vcore) in idle 2D, you can get 3-5°C less, but thats not so important.
