If you set profile to lower clocks (and or vcore) in idle 2D, you can get 3-5°C less, but thats not so important.
Hmm, is there any way to adjust the 2d profile? Currently it will drop the core down to 500mhz, but it would be nice to manually set it.

I'm also wondering if the rubber spacers on the heatsink have something to do with the gpu temps.. Maybe it's not making good enough contact.

I set up a 2d profile with ati tray tools of 300/300, both the gpu and the VDDC's sit at ~40c when idle.

When in 3d mode it is at stock speed (780/1000) and in most games the VDCC's do not get past 60c, in some more demanding games like Crysis they will hit 75c or so.

I am pretty satisfied with those results, and when not in a game I don't have to worry about damaging the card.

Yeah, this is what i meant Iam doing ot also with ATT. You just have to make sure, that everything in 2D works well at those low clocks too. (for example hw accelerated flash things in browser)

Yeah, I noticed that.. Under 250mhz on the ram, things start freezing. 300mhz seems fine, I have been running it for a while now without any issues.

For undervolting do you need a custom bios? I tried using ATI Tray Tools to undervolt, but it does not seem to take effect.

Yeah, that works only with BIOS modding. But i think you cant set there different voltages for 2D/3D.

Runs 24/7 since 2 years now. I see no problem with that.

Btw, mine has stock VRM cooling from sapphire still on it, so VRM temps arent going so high, just around 80.
I Idle with the Non-ref Stock cooler @ 50C. The HD 4870 1GB's take up a lot of power so It's about like having a GTX 460 in AMD Form.

VRM Temps are a huge problem with the HD 4870 also because the card uses a TON Of power, and because it's a 4 power phrase I believe (*checks*) - Yeah, It's a four power phrase (as in four chokes).

Your idle temps are much improved, but your load temps are still far higher than mine ever were. I had my 4850 at 1.158v via a bios mod. What voltage is your chip running at? I just checked and a 4870 has a stock vcore of ~1.26v. So that explains the temp difference.

I'll bet you can go even lower on you 2D core clock. My 470 drops to 50MHz.

Even if the temps are not lower, the cooling is still more efficient, since it does its work SILENT. Something that you wont have with ANY stock 4870 cooler

Ah, that sucks.. So that means no matter the speed it will always be at the same voltage.

I think in you mean 4-phase.

But yeah, it seems to be pretty difficult to cool those VRM's.

I lapped my VRM HS, put some better thermal tape on it, and mounted a small fan to the card pointing directly at the VRM's.

Now it seems to be a quite a bit cooler , it is idling at 32/33/35 (300/300) and after 15 min of furmark it maxes at 63/67/69 (780/1000), the GPU is more or less the same at 65c.

Ambient temps are around 23c.

Well, I have two monitors and I don't think at 50mhz aero/firefox/flash/skype would run smoothly.. It seems like after 300mhz, the temp does not change much.. Would probably need to undervolt.

Very true. And I am glad for that, noisy fans are annoying.
