Determining required power supply for system

I'm seen some negative feedback on PSU calculators on this board so I'd like to get some feedback from people before I needlessly spend money.

I'm looking to upgrade to either GTX 460 SLI or GTX 580. I currently have a 600w PSU but if I go through the Antec power supply calculator I get a recommendation of almost 700 watts.

My questions:
1. Is the number recommended in a PSU calculator the number advertised by the power supply or do we have to take into account efficiency? (Does a high quality 600w PSU actually deliver 600w?)
2. Do I actually need 700 watts or will my 600w PSU do the job?
3. If power supply calculators don't work, what's the best way to figure out how much power you need?

1) A high quality 600W DOES deliver 600W. However it is not smart to have the PSU at full load continuously.
2) For GTX460 SLI your ModXStream SHOULD be fine, but a better 650W unit would be optimal in the long long term. For a 580 you will be fine as it stands.
3) I recommend you use this calculator: http://www.overclock.net/power-suppl...alculator.html along with the recommended PSU list in that post.

A pair of GTX 460 or a 580 will run fine on your ModXStream 600W. Note that that PSU only has 504W@12V so calling it 600W was a bit of a stretch on the part of OCZ, but it will power a pair of 460s just fine.

To be clear, my PSU only has 2 PCI-e connectors so 600W would be enough with my build but I would need a different 600w PSU right?

Hmmmm.
You could always use PCI-E to Molex adapters. It's not a big deal.
