Unless it's almost 99% pure it will Gel up. Acetone is only about $5 at your local Hardware store.

If your working liquid is holding the cold, then it means it isn't taking the heat off the pot. You want your pot cold, not the liquid wink.gif

Not to be technical but...

In equilibrium, you will have a thermal gradient across the pot from the heat source, but your liquid will be about the same temperature throughout.

Additionally... Well, nothing "holds cold". Nothing is a "battery" of cold.

There is only the lack of heat.

So you want it to be taking the heat! And the only way heat moves is to a lower concentration (like most things), and so you remove the heat from the liquid with the dry ice, and then the differential is set for heat to transfer from the copper/aluminum to the acetone.

So, you don't want it to gel or you'll have to fight with a thermal gradient in the acetone as well as the material, vs letting it actively swirl around and such.
