How to automate inventory

I am building a website to start selling items online. However, i would like to inject a SQL database for inventory. BUT i am wanting this to be able to be updated with a POS system. Ideas would be great.

There are several software packages that take care of things like that already. Check out www.Chondrion.com if you are lookign for something fast and efficient.

If you are just starting out and have a low budget, check Yahoo Stores. eBay and Amazon also have stores. I'm not sure of the low-end solutions will meet your needs, but if you provide more details on what exactly you want to track I will be happy to provide more specific ideas.

That's fine, just make sure the web front end and the POS front end, both hook up with the SQL back end (so, if you were the SQL database, you wouldn't know where it came from as the transaction would look the same). Stored Procedures are what you need...

Chondrion can do that, but not Yahoo, eBay, Amazon, etc. There are some big boys that also play nice with web and POS (CoreSense, SAP, Oracle NetSuite, IBM WebSphere), but they are much more expensive and intended for enterprise-level companies.

"Injecting" a SQL database into your system doesn't really begin to address all your needs in this case.

You want to initially load a database?

Create a flat deliminated text file with your data and bulk load it into the table (usually there is a bcp function).

Then build your stored procedures to the database. (Don't forget to ensure authentication via user groups! Sony didn't do this and got hacked.)
Once again...

Looking at my previous work, I could manage to create something you need within a month or so. If you are a programmer, you should be able to work this out

Dude, if you can code in Java & Python, SQL is a piece of pie. 2 (main) choices - Microsoft SQL (Express is free, big companies use the real deal and pay for it), or MySQL (open source, used by everyone, but not 100% compatible with W3 standards - this is true of Oracle too)
