Decent RAID5 controller? - Page 3

You'll need an SFF-8484 cable to connect hard drives to a PERC 5/i.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16812120933 for example.

Thanks, I think I'll keep this one as the target to beat. All looks good on it, and feedback reports indicate a Windows interface and that it works on Server 2008.
It does have a windows gui, I just never got mine to work, nor did I spend much time trying to get it to work.

As for rebuilding, I'm not sure as I have my raid 0 array on the controller, which requires no rebuilding.

You can get pretty good write speeds on a NAS nowadays in RAID 5 for easy straight forward hot swap, warranty etc.
Have a look at http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/nas/n...o-ii-turbo-nas
Not the easiest thing to advise on when I don't know what your data is, where it's coming from and how your network is set up, but I definately wouldn't rule it out.
If a RAID controller is what you want then go for it but definately don't be stingy with it, you may regret it.

I don't understand... what "much better solution than a RAID controller" would I be looking at?

The rest of the system is listed in my sig.

Yes, thats what it's for. Should not need to be replaced any more often than a motherboard battery.
Thanks.

Ok, that makes a whole lot more sense. Thanks for the link.

Pretty sure I don't want to go the NAS route, but thanks for the advice nonetheless. Gigabit networking is fast, but I don't think I want to put that sort of load through my already-taxed router (and it's a fast router to begin with!)

Well, if you couldn't get it working, I'm not going to rely on me getting it working either. May as well go for something that I know will work.

Very true, but I didn't know if you were feeling adventurous today or not.

When I get home I'll go ahead and try to install the software again, maybe I just missed something and since I just reloaded my machine over the weekend then that may help as well.

I'll check it out tonight and let you know.

I'm still curious to hear what these better solutions are... care to elaborate? I doubt I have the funds to spend on anything more elaborate than a RAID solution, but I would like to see what other options are out there at any rate.

Personally, I would use gigabit fibre channels with a dedicated SAN, huge data transfer speeds, huge redundance, you can spend huge sums but you can investigate and find a used solution on the cheap but it won't be easy to find.
