nvidia gtx 460's not clocking down while idle?

Thread Starter
Hi all.

I've had 2x gtx 460's in SLI for a while now. cards have been running fine at 850mhz, and normally when idle one card has clocked all the way down to 51mhz, and the other 450mhz.
but yesterday i tried overclocking some more, and started having problems at 900. so i stepped down to 870, and everything seems fine.
except, they no longer clock down when idle.
i've tried going back to 850 and to stock, but same thing. doesnt clock down.

i've not modified the bios, and using msi afterburner 2.1.0 to set clocks and volts.

any idea if there's a way to fix this? they're running idle at 60c now, while before they could be as low as 35c on the coldest and 45-ish on the hottest

thanks in advance for any insight.

Nvidia control panel. Manage 3d settings -> power management mode, change to adaptive.

adaptive was the first thing i checked.
second thing i checked was the windows power plan advanced settings for pci express.

i've allways had the afterburner's sensors in a detached window on one monitor, and other stuff on the primary monitor, that's how i know the exact numbers it used to downclock too. the main windows of afterburner is minimized allready. starts minimized with boot.

thanks tho, any other suggestions ?

Mine don't drop to 2d clocks when I'm overclocked, only on stock settings. I think it has to do with afterburner.

Most likely afterburner maintains the speed to keep stability.

Is it really necessary? When mine downclocked it often had trouble returning to normal so I just disabled it.
