Windows crashing after updates?

Thread Starter
Ths has happened to me about 3 times now, not sure if it's a problem with my hard drive or what. Every time Windows updates, I go and open some program, then Explorer.exe crashes, then my whole computer locks up. Restarting leads to this problem again, sometimes even without opening a program.

The only way I can fix this is to go into safe mode, do a check disk, then system restore to a point before. But this won't fix it, because every time I do that, the computer won't even boot up. The way I fix THAT is to do a complete system repair after the restore, then a reboot. And that solves it until the next update.

I disable the updates, but sometimes it ignores that and installs the net framework and such without my permission, and that does it too. Does anyone know whats happening, or how to fix it?

Check to see if the HDD isn't bad/going bad.. If it's doing chkdisk. Something might be up.

I probably should have mentioned I'm using Vista 64-bit, and I have to manually do chk dsk, it doesnt automatically do it.

-Edit- Crashed again after restore, seems to run ok now, maybe not for too long though... =(

still sounds more like a bad/failing hard drive. run some hardware tests to confirm if it is or not
