580 1.5GB tri vs. 580 3GB tri vs. 6970 2GB tri: Which is truly fastest? - Page 3

Not sure if all of you missed it, but the reviews you're looking at aren't 3 6970s. It's a 6990 and a 6970 versus 3 GTX580. The reason I bring that up is because of the clocks on the 6990 being lower and this review is all stock clocks. Also, if you look at the high resolution tests, the two AMD cards have better minimum fps than the three Nvidia cards and that's more important than average. Minimum fps dictates what's playable from what's too choppy to tolerate.

No, at higher resolutions (like surround) VRAM becomes a huge limiting factor between these cards.

The review appleg33k85 linked was tested using sub-optimal IQ settings (no AA etc). With AA factored in, the 1.5GB cards reach their limit much faster than the 2GB 6970s, despite having the more powerful chip.

For example:

http://www.hardocp.com/article/2011/..._card_review/5

"In this apples-to-apples test we are comparing all three setups at 8X MSAA at 5760x1200 with "High" settings. The GTX 580 1.5GB SLI performance speaks for itself. Performance was so low we couldn't do anything in-game. We just left it sitting there running cause we couldn't hardly move. This is what you call a VRAM bottleneck. With the 2GB HD 6970 CFX and 3GB GTX 580 SLI it had the VRAM needed to run at this AA setting quite well. "

I'm probably not going to upgrade my sexy 1080p 120Hz 3D monitor in a long time so 580 1.5gbs in SLI will last me a long time when I need the upgrade another 580. Once ya go 120Hz you can't go back, seriously. 3D is just a plus that you can either love or hate.

Tri is really stretching it and can be a big waste of money at this time. Better to go with a good single card set up and see if you need a upgrade, it's likely that you won't for the games out so far. Unless you go big with 3 monitors right off the bat.

tri-fire hd6970 2gb = ($930 newegg.ca)

for $690 more they better be faster...
