You can mix any 5870 brands for crossfire. You can also crossfire a 5970,5850 and a 5830 with your card.

Sell the 5870 while it's still worth somthing and get a couple of 6870's.

On a per-card basis they're slower then a 5870 but when running crossfire they're faster then crossfire 5870's.

If one 5870 is faster than one 6870, wouldnt two 5870s still be faster than two 6870's then, or is that just they way they go together?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814150517

would that be an improvement?

The 6870 scale A LOT better then 5870's do so when paired up they out-perform crossfire 5870's.

I just sold my 5850 ($150) and got a gtx580 ($400, second hand). While a good improvement I am not sure if it was the right move. I prefer single card solutions though, so it was the only option that made sense for me.

To be honest, its not struggling with games. I just like to tinker and fiddle with different combinations with my computer. Maybe its best left well enough alone. As a side note, I have been thinking of trying another monitor with my 5870 as another direction to go. Will two monitors make a card struggle to produce the same quality of graphics on two screens, or does it not matter?
