What's a safe temp for the NB?

Thread Starter
Is 60C under load ok for my NB? Usually it doesn't go that high but it did peak there. Its usually around 55 under normal stress. Its at 1.35v. Stock is 1.25v.

I've been trying to find a sweetspot for my setup. After much research and trial/error, I seem to have narrowed it down to my NB voltage holding me back.

I just have a vanilla P6N mobo with a passive aluminum cooler, not the platinum with the copper NB heatsink and pipes

Yeah, for 650i, that's fine.

I remember my 680i would get over 55C even with the Thermaltake HR-05 cooler on it (and that was one huge cooler).

Also, chipsets are cut from the same silicone as CPUs, so they technically have a max TDP of 100C.

Just know that the voltage could severely increase temperature.

It's the usual dual-edged sword - if the voltage is too low, you can't overclock and if the temperature (caused by the heightened voltage) is too high, you also can't overclock.

But your temps are fine.

Awesome, thanks. So far I'm up to 3.16ghz @ 1580 fsb. Cpu voltage is set for 1.4v but reports at 1.392 and as low as 1.376v under load. Is that normal? Peaked at 66C running a small FFT test on p95

NB is at 1.45v now to get it seemingly stable at these numbers. And thats ok as long as the temps dont get too high?

Yeah, that's totally normal.

If I were you, I would overclock until I got to 76C.

And then, I would get a NH-D14 or TRUE to cool it. That way, you'll likely get to 3.6-3.8Ghz.

The thing about any silicone chip is - if it's stable, you're fine. You just have to make sure the temps don't get so high that it affects stability.

Yea 60c is fine, those things can handle pretty high temps, personally I wouldn't want to see anything over 70c, but they can handle higher as stated.
(some of those nvidia chipsets were notorious for doubling as branding irons).

Wow and all I kept reading about online was how anything above 62 was gonna affect longevity and kill lifespan!

About the cooler, you mean a cooler for the nb, not the cpu right?

Yep, I was referring to the nb heatsink (they can get quite hot to the touch - hence branding iron )
There are aftermarket ones, but most people just rigged a 40mm fan them to help bring temps down (or put it in a custom-loop if they really wanted to flog the board).

Haha gotcha. Yeah there's a side 80mm case fan that's kinda over the NB/CPU area already, more over the CPU than the NB but those two are close together on the board, plus theres a 120mm exhaust fan right behind the nb/cpu, plus the cnps9055 blows towards the big exhaust fan instead of down onto the cpu... I'd like to think its a good cooling system but TBH I wasn't sure what temps to look for. Plus I thought voltages could dmg components regardless of the temp changes they cause.

Though p95 seems to be stable after short tests, my comp keeps freezing after about 10 mins of gameplay. I turned up the nb voltage to 1.5v (the max that the board will let me put it at) and hopefully that fixes it. Any other suggestions?

P.S. - Even though my RAM is rated for 4-4-4-12 at 800MHz (even though it's underclocked slightly to maintain a 1:1 divider) I set it to 5-5-5-auto to see if that helps. Any other suggestions?

The HR-05 is a NB cooler. I don't know if it's still sold, but it's not expensive.

The NH-D14 or TRUE are CPU coolers, allowing you to overclock past 3.6Ghz.

Thanks for the info.

This may sound kind of stupid, but I came across some discrepancies online regarding what "TMPIN0" and "TMPIN1" referred to in CPUID Hardware Monitor. People were saying different things. Those are the only two "TMPIx" readings I have under "Temperatures." I was assuming TMPIN0 was the NB. Speedfan reports the same temperatures but labels them "Temp1" and "Temp2".

Just for clarity, which is what?
