How does Oracle make money?

Thread Starter
Quick question. How does Oracle generate revenue off of java? The language is free, netbeans is free. The only think that I can find that they charge for is certification.

They also charge for the mobile version of java for phones and such. Thats why google and oracle are in a lawsuit currently.

Poor Oracle, they provide us such revolutionary things, and the one thing they get paid from... it is getting stolen.

Not sure if you're serious or you're just being sarcastic, but Java is not the only thing that Oracle gets paid from... I seriously doubt that Mr. Ellison would have become one of the wealthiest men in the US/World if Oracle's sole source of revenue were Java.

And Java may not be revolutionary nowadays, but without it we would not have had AJAX so they have contributed something...

Oracle makes a DBMS (think SQL), one of the best, if not the best DBMS in the world, with over 50% marketshare. Putting Oracle certification on your resume will at the very least triple your chances of getting hired at any position even remotely related to databases. But it literally costs thousands of dollars to get trained. Basic DBA training will cost you around $10000 just for 10 days in a classroom.

But that pales in comparison to the cost of the actuall Oracle license, which can run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Oracle didn't make Java. In fact, Oracle hardly knows anything about Java. They acquired Sun so they could run around demanding licensing fees and suing anyone who uses Java without their permission. They're so idiotic that the people that made OpenOffice forked the project shortly after Oracle acquired Sun, because they couldn't stand Oracle.

This.

Oracle Financials is probably the biggest financial app in the world (that, or SAP). I'd bet that at least 50% of the top 100 riches companies in the world run their accounts on it. And they have big bucks, so Oracle charge big bucks.

And they make & licence Oracle SQL, used by many business apps. The app makers pay Oracle for use of the database system, hence the income.

Don't be fooled by Oracle's "open-source" policies they've bought up from Sun - they're 3rd in the software world alongside Microsoft & Apple, and every bit into making money as those two are

This actually is um.. not true at all. Perhaps you're thinking of javascript, which by and large has nothing to do with Java. The consortioum just wanted to make it 'look like' java and it shares the C like syntax, some of the keywords, and a lot of the APIs are similar. That's it though, it's all copycat..

Believe it or not, microsoft actually invented the XMLHttpRequest javascript class, so microsoft invented ajax. And the X is really not even used anymore, it should just be called AJ.

Java is a small sliver in oracles revenue pie chart... the RDBMS / consulting and their financial app are huge.

Slightly off post and geeky - I heard that it was coined ajax because ajax was sent out to kill flash. Don't know if that is true.
