Face it, Diablo II was practically rainbow-filled when compared with Diablo. I'd say that Diablo II and III are closer in design style than Diablo I and II are by miles.
From my point of view, i say that d1 was dungeon after dungeon, they innovated in d2 building act while keeping the same heavy atmosphere and darkness to it without changing anything too much (even the bright act 2 lead to dark dungeon), making it a true successor of the diablo 1.

Grim Dawn look way more authentic at the Diablo serie in graphics and gameplay than d3 just look at the pre alpha video...

I was going to take your word for it about the whole criticism thing, then I realized that we are on the internet.
i guess you never browsed the official SC2 forums. i used to frequent them every day. trust me, this game was met with a TON of criticism several months after its release. also, although it sold well (like I said and what many believe: it rode on the success of its previous titles), the rate of its sales after the first couple months has not met blizzard's expectations. hence why the game's price was slashed, and the collector's edition, greatly slashed. many also believe that Blizzard is getting into the Dota SC2 project because they are alarmed at how interest has tapered for the game. If you don't know, for WC3, Dota (arguably the most popular UMS map in the world for any game within a game) kept the game up. It's not far fetched to say that WC3 is absolutely nothing without Dota. Just look at the custom UMS maps.. what do you see? Dota pretty much all the way down. Blizzard knows the popularity of Dota and what it can do. Which is why they are trying to tap interest back with their own Dota version in the SC2 engine (good luck--they got competition from Valve coming with a standalone Dota game). read between the lines, don't think that one number is the end all.

I can't believe it but I'm just not excited about Diablo 3, I'm trying to be... and then I check out Grim Dawn and that just look amazing!! Torchlight 2 looks amazing!! I'll prob end up with Diablo 3 also but the Auction House is ~almost~ a deal breaker for me.. Guess I'll see how it looks upon release. Thanks for all those bring Grim Dawn to my attention however I'll keep my eye on that one.

I won't deny that the level variety present in Diablo wasn't as good as Diablo II, or that it was even a better game. The only thing I do object to is people that are looking at Diablo II's art style with rose-tinted glasses. It wasn't dark, it wasn't gothic, period. The first one was the only one that had even somewhat of a creepy, gothic vibe.

I think that both diablo 1 and 2 are both very dark but i agree that d1 was creepier than diablo 2.

^ D1... man those were good times. D1 had this feel to it, this rawness that was so awesome. The dark nature of that game with its crazy banjo music in the dungeons.... man they really should have returned to the D1 roots with D3, it would have made an epic, epic comeback.
Do you think that perhaps all you D3 nay-sayers are just stuck in the D1/D2 nostalgia? Try playing the game(s) again and see if you have the same feelings.
