[IGN] Diablo III's Five Character Classes In Detail - Page 13

D3: seemingly the entire world now, or at least the forces of hell truly unleashed on the world.

Yeah, it's ramped up
Sure, I remember Blizzard said the one Blizzcon QA that they didn't want the entire game to be dark and gloomy, and wanted a change of scenery every now and then as well.

Proof will be in the final game of course, but to me the art direction just isn't as dark as the first two.

2. Diablo 2 started with...gasp, 5 classes! ALERT THE PRESS . Blizzard will ABSOLUTELY make expansions for this, likely with more classes.

7.

Not dark.

Not dark.

REALLY not dark

Same here!

The main reason anything was "dark" in diablo 2 was because you were in caves/nests with NO LIGHTING. Forcing your own "light aura" to show anything. I for one prefer actually seeing
i think a lot of people are not understanding what is meant by "dark." some people they refer to it in terms of lighting. but i think most are referring to "dark" as in sinister environment and mood. D1 was the darkest, both in terms of lighting and mood. no doubt. D2 was lighter in color, and also lighter in mood, but it was still a good game and the sinister element was not lost. lessened, but not lost. now D3 has not come out yet, but based on what we have seen, it appears that it is brighter in color than D1 and D2, and the graphics really do not present a sinister environment at all. this, along with several other reasons, is why people are dismayed about the upcoming D3. i hope i am making sense.

Indeed, but that's really a ridiculous notion. D1 did not have any exterior areas, so any "light" graphics that would have been are just plain not there.
D2 did, and the graphics gave it a lighter mood so to speak, but the actual STORY mood, if you look at it, is darker. A vast spread of evil that dwarfs the first game.
D3 is similar, with more exterior areas that we've seen, and with actual, NATURAL (or as much as the engine can be ) coloring to nature instead of brown castle, brown castle, black castle, dark brown castle, and so on that we know from many FPS games .
However, if you look at the story, the setting is even darker. What was just a notion on the horizon in D2 is a full fledged invasion in D3. Bigger armies of demons have spread all over... if that isn't dark, I don't know what is.

I think this is a unique case of not "rose" tinted glasses, but "dark" tinted glasses while looking back at D1 and D2

Well they changed the art style even if it's not that authentic to the original i guess we're gonna be able to adapt to it over time, i hope the history and gameplay gonna be good and well worth the money, even if the graphics of the characters look very 2004 like.. They needed it to run on 5-10 years old pc and tablets too... I think it's gonna be easy to emerge into it, i just hope blizzard are not gonna sell exclusive set items/runes/uniques at real cost... Profit+transaction profit.

Indeed. The art style cannot stay at what it was in D1. Too much time has passed since then. D3's art style fits a large audience, as you say (and who says they won't have higher settings for those with better comps? remains to be seen) so it may seem outdated, but instead is just compatible with a lot.

As for the runes, I believe they mentioned it being a purely player driven system. If they put out an item, and set a price themselves, that price becomes a "standard" and they are forced to add more standards later on, which they do not want to do.

It looks pretty good!

It's really annoying having to sit through adverts and type in a birth date for each 1-2 min video.

Talking about dark evil feel, it's not only the art that makes for it, but also music and story and those 2 aspects that are guaranteed to be spot-on with any Blizzard game.

One thing I LOVED about Diablo 2 was the little doodads and background art that you came across while burning up mobs. Like in the A1 Catacombs or A3 Temple of Zakarum, coming across little bloodied up torture devices, pools of blood, corpses piled high over each other, guts and blood smeared over the walls. Like there was this huge massacre where everyone was painfully tortured and killed before you came along. It just adds that chilling contextual element that makes you shudder and think. I hope they capture that in D3.

and as mentioned above, the dark ambience was layered even more by the sounds and music. Loved it.
